Before you ask.. yup, I watched a whole season (or 2..) of Degrassi, what other rap blawgs out there are doing that? I just though this was kind of meta, a rapper acting while wearing a t-shirt of another rapper. I’ve been dying to get an excuse to use this, so I’m posting this as some sort of commemoration of the release of Take Care this week.  As for the 700k selling Take Care?  I’m not afraid to confess that I enjoy the album.

It takes a lot to get my lazy ass out of the house. A DJ Premier set and free french fries constitutes a lot.

Re:Generation is a documentary in which five DJs collaborate with artists well outside their respective genres. DJ Premier worked with Nas on a song with the Berklee School of Music Orchestra, Pretty Lights worked with Leann Rimes and Ralph Stanley, the Crystal Method worked with Martha Reeves on an R&B song, and Mark Ronson went to New Orleans to record a jazz song with the Dap Kings, Trombone Shorty, Erykah Badu, and Mos Def.

Director Amir Bar-Lev and DJ Premier appeared at an event last night in New York to debut the trailer, an extended version of the one that’s already online. There was booze and hors d’oeuvres (mini-burgers and boxes of fries from Pop Burger) and Bar-Lev and Premo participated in a Q&A where they talked about how making the movie increased their appreciation of music of all genres.

In the spirit of the night’s eclecticism, Premier played a set spanning Ann Peebles, Paul Simon, and A Tribe Called Quest. He played an unfinished version of the song he made for the movie. Often, when rappers do projects like these, they put on airs because they’re in the same room as a cellist. But the track still sounded Premo-ish and not too self-important. A wave of content hit the crowd when Premo dropped “Unbelievable” and went into some of his classics. A fun night, if a little bougie.

Oh, and Pete Rock showed up.

New York Comic Con! Baby Boba Fett with a tiny red lightsaber! Unabashed anime love! Sexy Asian Mario with big boobs! Hispanic Captain America! Comic Con, where we nerds come to roost! I wandered the floor on Thursday and Friday drinking in the sights and sounds and playing video games.

I watched a demo of Max Payne 3, which mixes the archetypal washed up alcoholic cop story with John Woo gunfights. Picture Max flying through the air in slow motion, firing dual magnums at faceless henchmen in São Paulo with all of the flair you’d expect from Rockstar Games.

I played a quick demo of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword that included a flying section and a boss fight. Both sections were clearly meant to introduce the game mechanics. Link flies on the back of a giant bird this time and in the demo, he has to chase down another bird. Flying with the Wii remote was smooth and felt a lot like the simple flying sections in Twilight Princess. The boss fight was a basic sword fight complicated by the use of Wii Motion Plus. You have to strike the enemy at specific angles to hit him, which took some practice. The new art style is bright and colorful.

I spent the most time playing the tenth anniversary remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. The game was extremely familiar – it’s basically the original game with updated visuals and some new features from Reach. I just couldn’t resist getting my Halo on against 15 other people (and placing in the top five every time).

I also ran through one level in Super Mario 3D Land, which was a weird hybrid of side-scrolling and 3D Mario. I still can’t get the 3D effect on the 3DS to work for me. It was an enjoyable enough Con for someone whose interest in comics is limited to a few Alan Moore sure shots and Loeb and Sale’s Batman.

Below, There are even more LOLs to be had at Kanye forcing a re-do during the opening of All Of The Lights when the (majority white) crowd didn’t call and respond to the “MJ Gone..” line loud enough.  A Rest In Peace shout-out to Black Eyed Peas was totally normal, too.

From the reviews ACL sounded like a swell job to wrap up the tour supporting My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Adrien Brody was at the Academy of American Poets at the Lincoln Center in New York last month.  The actor must be diligently at work towards achieving a coveted Hood Pass because he decided to recite The Ten Crack Commandments. I tried really hard to listen but his flaring nostrils were a huge distraction. Anyway, it’s not like I need a reminder on what the commandments are, as I have them tat’d on the belly. On a fun personal note: I am currently messing up like 4 of the commandments in my daily life. #losing.

Not trying to write the ‘Rappers React to X’ post, but Twitter had some jokes tonight. The United States killed Osama bin Laden today btw.

Funkmaster Flex went on Hot 97 two weeks ago to counter “rumors” (a police report) that his coworker Mister Cee was caught receiving oral sex from a man in the West Village (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Then, Flex implied that two employees from rival station Power 105.1 are gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and threatened to reveal their identities.

But our favorite part was that Flex had “Nino” work the signature Funkmaster Flex bomb during his rant. The result is.. well, let’s just say I haven’t laughed this hysterically in a while. I really hope Timbaland reaches out to dude, to make meme worthy music.

Sooo I just survived my first day of SXSW Music… barely. As I write this, all I can think about are my aching feet. Thank God I brought some comfortable sneakers, because my feet are really killing me and I’m just starting.

Anyway, the day started off with me getting into town, getting some amazing goat burger from a food truck called the Giggling Goat. So hip-hop. Oh, and I refuse to try BBQ. Linked up with the homie Jeff Weiss aka Hannibal Moncrief, who I’m sharing quarters with.  Then it was time to get my badge wristband.  Out of nowhere we got a free ride from Chevy to the convention center. As Weiss said, “Thank you Based God.” Just walking around the convention center seemed daunting. One could probably spend all his time there without even hitting the streets.

With the wristband cutting off the circulation to my right hand, it was time to see some music.

Here is who we saw (of what I remember):

Young L, Sean Garrett, Penguin Prison, DJ Premier with NYGz & Nick Javas, Chiddy Bang, DJ Cam, Erk The Jerk, Ellie Goulding, Killer Mike (who brought out Trae), and Clock Opera.

Highlight of the night: Penguin Prison.

Random Notes:

Ran into DJ Michael 5000 Watts at a showcase and talked very briefly. He mentioned that he’s working on a project where he is flipping dubstep. Be on the look out for that!

Food Turcks… good lord are there a lot of food trucks. Is a SXSW 15 possible in like five days? At this rate, I might need to buy a bunch of new jeans when I get home.
