Did you know that Dee Dee of the Ramones recorded a rap album as Dee Dee King in 1989? This single is not on the album but still terrible and entertaining in a kind of car-wreck way.
ML was at LIV Night Club last night to check out BYT’s 19 hour party (sadly, we were there for only about a 4th of that..there was some obscure ceremony going on downtown that we decided to check out.)

This was our 4th time seeing Wale live, making it his best that we’ve seen yet (and it softened the agony of missing out on that epic NYC show he had last month). Wale ran through his most known cuts like Nike Boots to W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. (favorite of the night?), in addition to performing 2 debut album cuts for the 1st time. Wale performed the Cool & Dre produced Chillin (the final version, which isn’t out, will feature Lady Gaga) and Pretty Girls. Wale’s stage presence should be in a textbook for all rappers performing live, the crowd was feeding off of it all night. The vibe of the whole club was so dope, that it seemed Wale didn’t want his time to end, scrambling last minute for a make-shift encore featuring a line over My President Is Black (“My President is Black, my credit card is too./ but my credit is fucked up thanks to that previous dude“) as well as inviting local-bred producer/rapper Oddisee to freestyle a quick 16.

Wale also had a few PSAs through out his set that stuck with us:

*UCB x Wale album coming soon (separate from the debut).

*If you hear someone mispronounce his name (ie Whale or Wall-E (Wale predictied that he’s gonna be bigger than the Pixar joint).. smack that person for Wale .

*Tre (of UCB) wrote a Lindsay Lohan (or say it like Wayne: Lo-hann) song.

*Wale is signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.

The event in of itself was kick ass, there were 2 floors of live music, cheap Colt 45s, intermissions with Burlesque Dancers and Comedians (Tig Notaro). We even got some good new music on to our radar, Team Facelift (who might be the wildest partying pack, I’ve ever seen live?) & Team Robespierre.

Peace to Dan & Wale; Victor & the BYT crew for organizing such a dope event.

Check the whole set of our pictures at the Flickr page. Seeing as I used my dslr camera at a concert for the first time, I plan on getting better at it, to see dope(r) fisheyed photo’s check out BYT’s stash.

Lastly, check what Washington Post had to say about Wale’s performance.

But we love it.

I woke up this morning and got this in my inbox:

When you’re one of the greatest emcees of the modern generation readying your bow from hip-hop with three albums, what do you do meanwhile? In Lupe Fiasco’s case, you simply watch a film, get invigorated, start a band, begin making not so bad post-indie punk music in a faux British accent, think of a peculiar band name (cue “Japanese Cartoon”), create a MySpace page, & upload the music. Then act like it isn’t you but rather Percival Fats. Cool.

There are only two tracks so far, and I’m not sure whether I love it or hate it. Its like punk rock, but the lyrics are clearly Lupe. The British accent is pretty annoying, but you would have to know me to find out why.

Either way you should listen to it, and reflect in the comments. Maybe I’ll take your opinion because I can’t find my own.

Cause I’m a tool.

I went to see Nardwuar’s band, the Evaporators, earlier this month and I got a chance to meet the man. Nardwuar is very friendly and a seriously cool guy.

It’s a bit late for a full review but I will tell you two things about the show.

1) The show was fucking awesome.

2) Nardwuar dressed as Canadian superhero Guardian on stage. (for people who don’t know who that is and are too lazy to click the link: he wore a skintight latex suit with the Canadian flag branded on it while on stage.

If you want to know what it looks like…

Bonus: Nardwuar interviews Flava Flav:

I’m so glad people are catching on to how great Nardwuar is. He makes me proud to be Canadian. If you’ve never watched/heard Nardwuar do his thing, you’re in for a treat.

I particularly recommend any of his interviews with Snoop Dogg. Nardwuar has interviewed Snoop 4 times now and the two have a wonderful rapport together. You can check out all their interviews here. Oh, and naturally there’s a picture of Snoop, Nardwuar and Bishop Don Juan on the page. Snoop has a habit of stealing any records Nardwuar brings to an interview.

Here’s Nardwuar’s 2nd interview with Snoop, from 2002:

The video for Korn’s “Twisted Transistor”with Lil’ Jon, David Banner, Xzibit and Snoop subbing in for members of the band, amusingly enough, features a Nardwuar look-a-like getting punched out after asking Snoop (as Munky) if he has an anger management problen. Fast forward to 3:45.

WOW. Via a Pitchfork Media interview with Rivers:

Pitchfork: Can you elaborate on what a more experimental Weezer record might sound like?
RC: Longer songs, non-traditional song forms, different people writing and singing, instrument switching, TR-808s, synths, Southern rap, and baroque counterpoint– for starters.

When asked for clarification on the rapping part:

Pitchfork: Oh, and who’s doing the rapping?

RC: Moi.

Now, I love both the Blue Album & Pinkerton very dearly. But that sounds like a fucking awful idea. Is he taking a page from Cosby’s book? What would “Buddy Holly” sound like with 808s?

A little something from Stones Throw to warm your hearth in this cold season. Badd Santa is a dope compilation of really bizarre and great Christmas (and a little Kwanzaa) music, from reggae to Miami bass.

Here’s a sweet little promo ST made for the album.

You can check it out here. There’s a nice mix of the Badd Santa songs available through the Stones Throw Podcast too, mixed by label head Peanut Butter Wolf.

For all my fellow Heebs celebrating the last night of Channukah tonight: Fatlace Magazine hipped me to Shady Records head Paul Rosenberg’s annual Hannukah Radio show on Shade 45 on Sirius Satellite Radio, with special guests DJ AM, actor Jonah Hill (Superbad kicks ass) & Marky Ramone of the Ramones! Takes a while to load but it’s worth it.

There’s a second set of shows available at Rosenberg’s blog, Paul Rosenberg. For those celebrating Kwanzaa, I think you already know.

Rumor Has It is the reason why anyone ever fell in love with punk rock in high school, saved up for that electric guitar and pitiful second-hand amp. They were the band that played for beer at Jason’s house when his parents went to the Cape for the long weekend. They are the band that plays every Battle of the Bands they can, rock out like it’s their last show, and will play in your basement no matter how small a party it is.

The keep-it-simple, keep-it-sweet trio from a sleepy town tucked away in the Northwest corner of Washington state dish out twelve minutes of honest punk rock on their eponymous EP. The no-frills four-song set keeps your foot tapping and the subject matter simple: “Slut” (perfect for mixtapes) and “Party Song” (the ultimate anthem for getting plastered and making choices you will regret in the morning).

This EP may not win a Grammy for songwriting but if you’ve been neglecting the punk in you, here’s your chance to make good again.
