Don’t you love that feeling when you hear a track so good from an artist that’s new to you that you seek out their whole catalog. That’s the feeling I had when I had this funky electronic track come across the ML e-mail box a few day ago. I went in search of more music, only to find out their debut isn’t even out, but they do have some samplings on their myspace. The group is from Portland, but their debut, Mind Chaos is coming out in the UK first on Virgin in June, shortly followed by their Stateside debut on Capitol. Plus, how can you hate on a band named after the best sport ever?
Beautiful new Wu-Tang. This must be one of the tracks Meth was talking about when I asked him about Cuban Linx 2 last year. It doesn’t sound grimy enough to have been on the original Cuban Linx, which is what a lot of us had been hoping for, but it’s definitely a solid track and a good look for Wu-Tang in 2009.And it’s much better than “Criminology 2.”
Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian communications theorist and writer, who devised the expression, “the medium is the message”. What he means by this: the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship through which the medium influences how the message is perceived. (via Wikipedia) In 1967, he wrote The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects, which explained how the effects of media massages the human sensorium. The same year, he released an audio recording of this work on Columbia Records.
The album consists of McLuhan reading statements from the book while repeatedly being interrupted by a variety of speakers: people criticizing his theories, other people reading the book in weird voices, sped-up recordings of McLuhan, odd random sounds and samples of incidental music encompassing different genres and moods. The idea was to create a media pastiche that would evoke TV’s connection of unrelated images in audio form. It foreshadowed many future sound experiments, especially those put together by Steinski and turntablists like DJ Shadow. It’s certainly not the earliest form of sound collage, but it’s striking how close it sounds to modern sound experimentation. It’s out of print now, but you can download it here, courtesy of the blog The Sphinx.
As promised here is more Chester French for your mind. This was lingering around in the drafts for like 2 weeks, so apologizes for the tardiness. ML got to check out D.A. & Max aka Chester French do a quick acoustic set in one of DC’s dopest boutiques, For The Greater Good about 2 weeks back. After we saw the planning go down on twitter right in front of our eyes, so we had to check this out (as D.A. said it was a historic moment, performances brokered on twitter!). Interestingly enough CF opened up with their biggest song/single She Loves Everybody, mostly due to audience request. As soon as the song started ML was pretty much sold on CF’s live act. D.A. has a very unique, yet powerful voice that was ringing out clearly through out the store sans any mic, while Max played the catchy melodies on the guitar. We look forward to hearing and checking out more stuff form the duo. Their debut Love The Future drops on March 31st.
To get your own samplings of Chester French check the links & the tour dates below.
(Head over to RCRDLBL to grab 2 great remixes by The Neptunes & Steve Aoki. Also, word on the street is the video for the song is going to be released tomorrow.)
You can catch Chester French on tour with Lady Gaga starting in March, the dates along with one bonus photo of our after the jump.
We’ve all been in this situation. Something goes haywire at the worst possible time and customer service promises they’ll call back in a few minutes. Chi-City, hold ya head.
