For a little context, Javelin are a Brooklyn based hip-hop instrumental group that makes incredible summery jams out of samples and keyboards. Their self-released album Jamz & Jemz is one of the best things I’ve heard all year. This video captures Ohio rapper Stalley and ML-fave Curren$y rocking over the Javelin track “Susie Cues”.
Hip-hop and indie rock are intersectingin interesting, more creative ways than the days of the Judgment Night soundtrack.
I wasn’t expecting much from Obie Trice’s post-Shady Records opus, but Special Reserve is his best work yet. MoSS’ production suits him very well, random as their collaboration is. Ex-major label rappers usually fizzle, but it sounds like Obie found a comfortable niche.
Here’s the second leak from The Demo (get the first here). Terrace Martin continues to raise the bar. Crazy dope how he backs up the vocals with a backup singer.
All Star is an emcee out of Nashville who’s been stranded on Cash Money for ages – but I’m ignorant and haven’t been paying attention to how much praise he’s been getting. “Homies” is a heartfelt dedication to the friends who supported him while he was stranded in industry limbo. You might recognize that Barry White sample from Raekwon’s “North Star" (Jewelz)” and “Return of The North Star”. Very, very dope.
This off his upcoming tape Starlito’s Way 3: Life Insurance.
Danny! is what Charles Hamilton would sound like if he didn’t suck. Playful, sharp rhymes over slightly left-field production. You have no excuse not to download it since it’s FREE!
CLASSIC cheesy club banger from Bobby ValentinoJeremihPleasure P Verse Simmonds. I love how Game raps about having a gun on him on a song meant for 14-year-old girls. Game’s fierce verse compensates for OJ, Jermaine, and Juvi’s shitty ones. I’m about to get some chick pregnant to this one!
Wale condemns gold-digging women on this 9th Wonder-produced gem. Mr. Folarin has a knack for exploring relationship issues without being a cornball R&B rapper.
