Debate is raging on Twitter over the exclusion of dark skin girls from a video for a song called “Pretty Girls.” Come on, Wale. Didn’t you listen to Del?
I missed the Freddie Gibbs/Pill hype train, but I dig the ultra-vivid street talk on “Thoughts.” Pill is definitely a lyricist. The banging guitar-synth beat helps too. This song comes from Pill’s upcoming mixtape 1140: The Overdose. He’s also working on his debut album for Asylum Records.
Extremely laid back jawn from previously featured Tennessee rapper All Star. Off All Star and Burn One’s mixtape Renaissance Gangster which drops February 15.
Exile flipped the shit out of that Barry White sample. “The Score” is a song that only appears on the vinyl version of Fashawn’s album Boy Meets World. Fashawn and Planet Asia are two of my favorite West Coast lyricists right now and both drop spit-filled verses on here.
We already know Shallah’s got a taste for quiet storm, but this takes it to another level. Rae flows lovely over this butter-smooth Luther Vandross sample and Cap and NORE’s raspy tones provide a lovely contrast to the track’s quiet storm vibe. Reminds me off “Closer” off the first CNN record.
Three recent Flying Lotus tracks for dat ass. The first is a Flying Lotus joint that will not be on his new album “space opera” Cosmogramma. The second is a track he produced for Warp labelmate Gonjasufi. The third is FlyLo’s remix of Gucci Mane’s “Photo Shoot.” If you’re wary of listening to anything Gucci Mane-related, listen to what FlyLo did to Lil Wayne first and try not to poop in your pants. Grab em at Warp.
Everyone loves 50 Cent, everyone is on that shit, that shit’s dark. Like a lot of the lyrics that I hear in hip hop are negative, that’s just the truth. I just want to work with people that are trying to do good and send out good vibrations on this earth. Seriously, there are enough negative forces out there. Even if they’re not killing people its juts like people who are making music that like kills culture and killing art and the idea of art and the idea of progression. All that shit is death.
Consequence’s upcoming album boasts production from Q-Tip and Kanye West, but I’m psyched to hear more of his work with Statik Selektah. “Life is Short” is one of my favorite songs on 100 Proof.
Consequence’s mixtape will be called Movies on Demand. The album is ConsTV.
To mark the tenth anniversary of Big Pun’s untimely passing, some Latino rappers updated Pun’s “Glamour Life.” Big Pun’s son Baby Pun also contributes a verse. Pun was the first and last truly great Latino rapper.
