Fat Joe – Slow Down (Ha Ha) (ft. Young Jeezy)

Every Fat Joe album has had at least one incredible street single, and while this is no “Safe 2 Say”, it’s still seriously dope. Scoop deVille’s beat is hard as hell and Jeezy sounds surprisingly comfortable. Joe’s verse even edges past passable!

Mike Schpitz – Daily News (prod. SLOT-A).

I wasn’t familiar with dude before I heard this, but he flows nicely over a hard, bass-driven beat by SLOT-A. Off DJ Booth’s Rhymes & Rhythm for Relief mixtape, which you can cop by making a $5 donation to Haiti. The tape features K. Sparks, Pugz Atomz, Mikkey Halstead, among many others.

Killa Kyleon – Swang Real Wide (ft.Z-Ro).

A bit late on this, but holy shit is this song great. A potent combo of Z-Ro’s cold crooning and Kyleon’s killer punchlines over incredible bongo rolls, scorching organs and violins. Produced by Sound Mob, definitely keeping a sharp eye out for their beats in the future.

Game – Pussy Fight (ft. Ray J, Ester Dean).

Unpredictable as Game is, I don’t think anyone was expecting “Pussy Fight,” a disturbingly graphic oral sex ballad. “Pussy Fight” isn’t even a typical misogynistic rap song. That would be too normal. Game actually made an entire song about performing oral sex on his woman and how much he likes doing it.

This is also the second time Game has used Auto-Tune on his own vocals. The first time was the blood anthem/Bishop Lamont diss “Red Rockin.” Auto-Tune has gained a reputation as the overused accessory of b-grade mainstream rap artists. Auto-Tune was a questionable choice on “Red Rockin,'” but it makes more sense on “Pussy Fight” because it’s “for the ladies.”

Auto-Tune actually works on this song. Game took a played out vocal effect that everyone was sick of and turned into something extremely perverse. The problem with Auto-Tune was every artist slapped it on their song because the next guy was doing it. Game’s usage is more valid because it serves a creative purpose. “Pussy Fight” is an x-rated take on the corny 09 rap single, though it has more in common with the Internet classic “Smell Yo Dick,” than any T-Pain song.

But let’s not avoid the elephant in the room: Game made an entire song about eating pussy.

Memphis Bleek – Still Ill.

(image)

Memphis Bleek took some time off from his weed carrying responsibilities to pen this great track. If he can keep this up, his album The Process might be kinda decent.

Mos Def – The Tournament.

This leftover from Mos Def’s last album uses the same sample as Raekwon’s “Black Mozart.” Much like songs on The Ecstatic, “The Tournament” abandons traditional song structure. After a verse, Mos breaks into his reggae singing voice and howls for the second half of the song.

Unlike on Rae’s joint, the sample isn’t chopped at all and just plays from beginning to end. The sample is the theme from the godfather played by The Professionals. You could call that lazy, but there’s no denying this track is dope as hell.
