Remix Tuesdays: Busta Rhymes

Sorry for the absence, I’ve been crazy busy with exams coming up in a week or so. But I’ve had Busta Rhymes on the brain lately and I wanted to cover him for my weekly Remix Tuesdays feature. Today I’m covering the World Wide Remix of Busta’s classic “Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check”, featuring Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

The original “Woo-Hah!!!” rocks thumping drum hits, a clipped bass line, and most famously, an off-key yet oddly catchy piano sample from Galt McDermott’s “Space”. It was produced by frequent BR collaborator Rashad Smith and was mixed by Busta himself. “Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check” was actually not the first single off Busta’s debut The Coming, but it is definitely the most popular (does anyone listen to “It’s A Party” today?).

The song garnered a massive amount of remixes, collected on its various single releases. The World Wide remix is on the CD maxi-single, the one pictured at the top of the post. Busta hooks up with the best Russell Simmons for the remix I’m writing about today.

ODB sums up the mentality of the duo on this track:

We on some outer space shit like you watch Star Tek….

The remix is also produced by Rashad Smith. The new beat uses a slightly different section of the same Galt McDermott sample and a more prominent bass line. It sounds a lot like the original beat slowed down, with Busta even singing the opening “Yah yah yah, yah” slower, stretching his syllables to sound even crazier.

As the “Yah yah yah”s fade out, Ol’ Dirty chimes in with the trademark demented bellowing. From there, the duo trade off increasingly bizarre one-liners to the bassy, echoing beat.

The video for the remix is especially amazing, featuring ODB and Busta stumbling about a padded room in a straitjacket built for two. It cuts occasionally to Ason and Busta Bus shirtless with their bodies painted gold and silver, respectively.

ahhhhh, I have some fond, fond memories with this song and this video. It’s also one of the last CD singles I ever bought.

It’s also one of the subjects of an up coming guest post I have coming to a blog near you….the story associated with this song at least…

    Great post!

Trav: I recall you mentioning in an old WYDU post that you used to get tanked and walk around singing this all the time.
Thanks for the kind words, looking forward to the post.
