ML Radio: The Lost Season…..

We left for a while. But we were just making moves. Loads of live shows, and some wildness. Here is what you’ve been missing. Enjoy.

04/17/2008- Hip Hop In Potomac Basement
For this night we did ML Radio live in the basement of one the residence halls at the school. We had 2 DJ’s (Neobanzia and Joe Cool) and one MC (Grey Matter). We set up on a ping-pong table and Grey Matter just started ripping freestyles over the beats Joe Cool threw on. It was real hip-hop. We taped some of the freestyling and Joe Cool’s set.
[Neobanzai’s set is coming soon.] Read the rest of this entry »

I remember reading about these tapes a while ago but never got to hear them. Shouts to KB for uploading them, since we at ML are suckers for Premier mixes.

Peep Killah’s spot for links to download the rest.

And just because I like “Tried By 12” so much, here’s some bonus beats:

NameTag – The Rhyme Royal Mixtape.

Another day, another mixtape. I first heard Detroit’s own NameTag on the Fat Ray & Black Milk joint The Lookout (via Sit Down Stand Up). All around dope song with NameTag holding it down lyrically and Black Milk coming with a crazy beat, but I never gave NameTag a second thought until I saw he had a new mixtape out. I’m pretty late with this one, as it was up on his MySpace more than a month ago, but I still had to post it. NameTag drops some great punchlines (“I man up with a flow strong as Samson before the haircut”) and has a consistent flow. The production is Black Milk-inspired and split between Magnif, Black Bethoven, and of course Black Milk himself; mostly dope beats and of course Black Milk stands out.

Highlights:

NameTag – Red Alert (prod. by Black Milk)

NameTag – MC Means… (prod. by Black Milk)

NameTag – So Raw Pt. 2 (prod. by Black Bethoven)

Remix Tuesdays: Souls of Mischief

“93 ‘Til Infinity” was the debut single of Hieroglyphics-affiliated group Souls of Mischief. It’s produced by group member A-Plus, who uses a lovely Billy Cobham sample, with laidback keys complimented by a wailing sax and rugged drums. The song also has an instantly memorable chorus:

This is how we chill/ from 93 ’til

The song got an iconic video of the Souls rapping on the beaches, cliffs and rooftops of Oakland, CA, featuring cameos from the whole Hiero crew:

A-Plus’ remix uses an Ad-Rock vocal sample (just like the last remix I covered) over stripped down beat with loopy keyboards which smooth out every few bars and a busy bass loop. A-Plus uses a raw, knocking drum break, not terribly different from the original’s percussion. It keeps the verses from the original but adds a new chorus:

From now on/we got it goin’ on

The group also uses the original’s chorus a few times in the remix. This version omits Tajai’s intro and has a different outro that lets the beat ride out for a few seconds.

Pretty hard to improve on the original but it’s always nice to have another version of a classic when the OG starts to feel a bit played out.

As always, compare the merits of each in the comments:

L-Chedda & G-MAN-Let Em Know.

A

A friend of ML tipped us off to this one. We can’t get enough of the Armani Exchange shirts (a first for rap videos?), the overly heavy bassline, and that magical hook.

Jay-Z to represent the New Jersey Nets at the NBA Lottery drawing.

Via TSN. Wow, is there any medium left that Hov is yet to be in? The only thing that is left for him is to become a Today show host or some ish. Too bad the Wizards aren’t in the lottery, then they could’ve sent DeShawn. Anyway, I miss Russ Granik.

Sum Podcasts For Dat Azz

I’ve been really enjoying Peter Rosenberg & Cipha Sounds’ Juan Epstein podcast lately (peace to Eskay for originally hipping me to it).

I urge you to download the latest JE podcast and furthermore, subscribe to Juan Epstein’s RSS feed (iTunes link) I don’t know if a lot of ML readers are really checking for podcasts, so I want to recommend a few of my favourites. If you like Juan Ep, I recommend checking out other funny dudes bullshitting for about an hour:

You Look Nice Today: 3 nerdy and funny guys speak on subjects ranging from work out routines to computerized career counselling. Bills itself as an “audio-based Journal of Emotional Hygiene”.

Jordan, Jesse, GO! : Jesse Thorn, of the Sound of Young America, and Jordan Morris, of FUEL TV do a semi-weekly podcast of entertaining banter and weirdness. Often has guest appearances by personalities like Andrew WK and John Hodgman.

The Flop House: Funny discussion of recent film flops. Great stuff.

Post your own podcast suggestions in the comments.

Rashid Hadee – A Change Gon’ Come.

Dude caught my attention when Sit Down Stand Up posted his Pete Rock-produced Oxygen, which as my friend Grant points out, sounds a lot like Hip-Hopcrisy off PeteStrumentals. Conveniently enough, he dropped a new mixtape last week.

Hosted by Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother and mixed by Cosm Roks, A Change Gon’ Come is a nice collection of sharp lyrics and classic-sounding sample-based beats, which you might like if that Curren$y mixtape wasn’t your thing.
