Remix Tuesdays: East Flatbush Project.

Note from AM: I’m pretty busy with midterms right now, so I’m bringing back Jorge from Bang The Box for a guest post in the Remix Tuesdays series. Read his last post here.

Huge respect to AM for inviting me back to guest on the Mighty Metal Lungies, but enough pleasantries, let’s get back to business.

From the first lick of Odetta’s “Sakura,” you should know exactly what this is, it’s a classic without need for argument. Spencer Bellamy’s seminal “Tried By 12” was snapping necks left and right in ’96 with its entrancing yet moody melody and Des’ ominously cold flow. I could break his verses apart line-by-line, but the citation and analysis of the clever wordplay contained within would extended for pages.

Originally touching down on Bellamy’s own 10/30 Uproar, the single was picked up by Chocolate Industries in ’98, and licensed to Ninja Tune in the same year. The beauty of Chocolate Industries backing this track was the onslaught of remixes that followed suit. Enlisting an A-List of abtract and forward-thinking producers for the double twelve, both labels capitalized on the beginning of the glitch-hop movement that is huge today — 10 years later. The release included flips from Ko-Wreck Technique (Push Button Objects & DJ Craze), Phonecia, The Herbaliser, Funkstorung, Autechre, Squarepusher, and Nick Fury to name a few.

Today you’re going to get served up with the video, the original and some of my favorite alternate mixes from that piece of deleted catalog. I’m all about spreading that rarity wealth and all of these hold special places in my history for one reason or another. They not only represent the classic sound, but what was the next business during that era.

I was going to make it 4 and not 5, but that Squarepusher mix is too funky to be slept on. Playlist all that shit, put it on blast, and enjoy.

Remix Tuesdays forever.

Fool’s Gold Records + Scion A/V Free Tour.

In you’re planning on being in one of the select cities listed below in the next week or so, it would be to your benefit to check out Nick Catchdubs and other acts from his label, Fool’s Gold Records, as they’re putting on a free tour sponsored by Scion. Scion’s latest sampler is a double-CD featuring music from Fool’s Gold artists like Kid Cudi and Kid Sister. Check the tracklist here.

You may remember Nick from his having hosted Wale’s 100 Miles And Running mix (still available for D/L at Nick’s blog), which was my introduction to the D-M-V’s future star, who I’ve been a fan of ever since. For that reason, Nick will always hold a special place in memory bank… in addition to the fact that he’ll be contributing to our next Beat Drop — a revisiting of a previous Beat Drop honoree’s catalog — which should be up on ML early next week.

  • Tuesday, October 21 — Miami, FL
  • Wednesday, October 22 — Atlanta, GA
  • Thursday, October 28 — Philadelphia, PA
  • Wednesday, October 29 — Baltimore, MD

RSVP for these shows here. And, as you might’ve guessed, Fool’s Gold will also be part of the massive CMJ Music Marathon taking over New York City this week.

Floyd Mayweather has a hockey bag full of money.

I got a an email blast for some Freck Billionaire song with Red Cafe. What I got was 10 minutes of Floyd Mayweather talking about his hockey bag full of money, and Freck’s Gucci bag with 60k.. and how he and his crew are going to take over the world. If it was me? I’d just show an atm deposit slip on that with my millions.. since its printed on thermal paper, you know if it isn’t faded, its the truth!

Me and Nardwuar.

Hey, I forgot to mention this happened:

I went to see Nardwuar’s band, the Evaporators, earlier this month and I got a chance to meet the man. Nardwuar is very friendly and a seriously cool guy.

It’s a bit late for a full review but I will tell you two things about the show.

1) The show was fucking awesome.

2) Nardwuar dressed as Canadian superhero Guardian on stage. (for people who don’t know who that is and are too lazy to click the link: he wore a skintight latex suit with the Canadian flag branded on it while on stage.

If you want to know what it looks like…

Bonus: Nardwuar interviews Flava Flav:

I should really go to OKP more often than I do, and this REALLY reminded me so. ?uestlove had a thread where he told stories and anecdotes on various famous people as requested by OKPers. Let’s just say the results are classic, I spent a good hour reading through it, when I should be packing.. but so worth it.

I’m going to quote one story as a sample, about D’Angelo to get a sense of the amazing insider/personal stuff ?uest shares..

K. Sparks – Hip Hop (produced by Moe Productions).

Some generically titled hotness for y’all this week. It really doesn’t seem like he’s been doing this for eight weeks. Words:

This is another record from The Blue Tape…it’s essentially a song about Hip Hop music…when this song was recorded I was in the studio with Angelous and Kid Cudi…Moe Productions did the beat and it’s dope…myself and Moe have a dope chemistry because we have been working together for years…his beats are real melodic and they always have a certain vibe that captures mood music…I’ll check ya’ll next week.
