New Souls of Mischief! Sweet. 93 Til Infinity is a great album that doesn’t get enough props, but I’d be lying if I said I was familiar with much of the Souls’ work after that album. There’s been rumors floating around for a while about a new Souls album produced entirely by Prince Paul. In February, I posted a video of A-Plus claiming the album was done. Nothing’s leaked yet; this doesn’t sound like a Prince Paul beat, anyway, but it’s still pretty damn nice.
Must watch: DJ Premier sits down with Peter Rosenberg to talk about his career and all the amazing stuff he’s done. I know from experience that talking to Premier is unforgettable. He talks to Rosenberg about “Nas is Like,” “Unbelievable” and so much more.
On “Nas is Like”
On “Unbelievable” and hanging out with Biggie on Fulton street
On his favorite producers, wanting to work with Ghostface and 50 Cent, having his own album
No, its not fake. The Ying Yang Twins are doing a Christmas album. I got this via e-mail and I thought it was a joke until I heard this. The only track I heard was “Sleigh Ride”, and it might be the biggest piece of shit I have ever had to suffer through. Its all about Christmas!!!
Think about it. A Ying Yang album with a positive message, little to no cussing, and nobody talks about their penis!!! What the hell is the point?!
The best part of my day came when I read the statement that the promoter sent with the news about the Christmas album:
The Ying Yang Twins are getting into the holiday spirit with a new Christmas themed EP, The Ying and the Yang of the Holidays, out now through Deep Records. The EP finds the twins striking a Bing Crosby-esque pose and caroling listeners with medleys of traditional Christmas songs with a Ying Yang Twins twist. On “Sleigh Ride” D-Rock and Kaine drink eggnog and smoke blunts while making a Christmas wish for peace in the hood and giving President elect Barack Obama a shout out. “This Christmas” is a soulful take on a holiday classic, and “Deck Da Club” and “Carol of Da Bellz” are quintessential Ying Yang Twins.
“Sleigh Ride” and “Ballin’ on XMas” from the Jim Jones album are after the jump.
I’m one of those people who usually won’t touch R&B or soul unless it’s thirty years old, but Marsha Ambrosius’ new mixtape might be worth checking out. She signed to Aftermath in 2005 and has since appeared on songs with The Game (“Start from Scratch” and “Why You Hate The Game”), Busta Rhymes (“Get You Some” and “Cocaina”) and Hi-Tek (“Music for Life”). Her new mixtape, Yours Truly, is produced entirely by Aftermath staff producer Focus… This track off the mixtape really has that Aftermath sound. The other two ain’t bad either.
Wale is getting on that Phish tip, getting his full concert recordings on the internets. Annnnd did I just hear a Nirvana cover on W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. ? *rewinds*
Off the upcoming Biggie Smalls: Rap Phenomenon DVD coming out January 27th, right after the biopic. D-Dot remembers Biggie calling him to his side and singing him the hook for “Hypnotize” for the first time.
I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Biggie biopic, but I feel like it will focus on drama and omit classic moments like this.
ML friend Berk hit me up to let me know about a series of tour podcast diaries Zune is doing with Murs & Kidz In The Hall (the recent ML Hollers @ subjects). To view all of the episodes you need to sign up at Zune (here for Murs & here for Kidz). The professional quality production is nice, no camera phones clips here.
Yesterday while reading Modi’s thesis on facial tattoos & craziness (the Stephon Marbury interview is a.must.see), his Mike Tyson clip triggered me to look up if there was anything new regarding the James Toback documentary Tyson. While there is no trailer out, some French site has 2 random clips from the doc, which reminded me of how why I need to see this ASAP. Sadly, IMDB only lists a release date in the UK for 3.27.09. If this doesn’t hit the US (which would be a huge blunder), maybe a nice quality bootleg will come out of it.
