Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek) – Back Again.

People talk up Talib Kweli as one of hip-hop’s best lyricists, but his wordplay on this track ranges from great,

Nighttime when the ghetto come alive
and the artificial die like yellow number five

to primitive,

From New York to California
The way we do it, it’s fluid just like water

Yeesh. Hi-Tek’s production remains on point though, so I’m somewhat optimistic about the album. Revolutions Per Min comes out this summer.

5 O’Clock Shadowboxers – Dirt Naps.

Full disclosure: this duo, consisting of emcee Zilla Rocca and producer Douglas Martin, are friends of mine. I’d still recommend their shit even if they weren’t, trust.

This song is a teaser for the Shadowboxers‘ upcoming album, The Slow Twilight; it comes out June 23. I’ve been bumping an advance of the record for the last few months and it’s already made my best of ’09 shortlist.

Bonus: my favourite track on the album. Zilla and Douglas leaked it a few months back, stop sleeping!

Maino has a wide range of emotions (and a mixtape).

Maino is one the most underrated dudes coming up right now IMO, he just rubs me as a completely genuine dude. In the past few days he’s been showing that he has a range of emotions to share with the world.

Over the weekend Maino cried upon recently finding out his friend got shot and paralyzed by the cops:

Then yesterday he was a cheery Mariachi player at Hot97:

Via Miss Info

But enough talking about Maino’s emotions, check out some music from the man in the form of a mixtape I’ve had chillin in my e-mail box for wayyyy to long, Black Flag City which features a bunch of his Hustle Hard crew..

But, you’ll have to jump to see the Cover/Tracklisting/download.

Point And Laugh At Them Like Statler And Waldorf.

“High Grade” is a mellow headnodder from my fellow Canucks, Sweatshop Union and when I saw the video, I knew I had to share. I’m always happy to recommend Canadian hip-hop, and this is dope. Great video concept too – I love OnSmash, but it’s nice to see a video that isn’t just dudes hanging out on their block and rapping. The Statler and Waldorf sample wins.

Ludacris x Snoop Dogg x Nate Dogg x DJ Drama x Busta Rhymes.

Yup, that’s a lot of names. It’s two tracks actually. The first is Luda spitting straight misogyny alongside Snoop with a hook from who else but Nate Dogg. Props to Luda on being versatile enough to do a West Coast track and sound natural doing it.

Download: Ludacris – Good Relationships (ft. Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Katt Williams)

The second is off DJ Drama’s album Gangsta Grillz: The Album Vol. 2. Luda’s presence on the track eclipses both Willie’s and Busta’s. Even though Busta is the one known for the yowling and the ‘Woo Hah’s, Ludacris’ animated performance is the standout. And Mr. Thanksgiving (I’m pissed I didn’t come up with that nickname first) does the best screaming DJ voice since Kay Slay. Sorry Khaled.

And as a guilty pleasure, here’s Luda’s take on “Birthday Sex.” Listen to it. Nobody’s looking.

Lil Kim – Download, Video.

Like I mentioned before, I rarely post videos..but I had to chirp in about this video, just because of the WTF values of the song/video. This song itself is like as if Lil Kim was itching to make an anthem dedicated to Motorola 2 Way pagers, but didn’t have time to release it (I wonder why?), so she tried to modernize it as an anthem about the internets. Who is this even geared towards? The group of dudes that were in amnesia for the last decade and are desperately looking to Lil Kim to school them on the topic of the internet? At least, there is home honesty in the video, Windows XP reigns supreme! Also, Charlie Wilson (who I do enjoy normally) is not needed in this video..at all. Lastly, you know we are in a recession when instead of using Minority Report style super computers you’d expect to see ala Hype Williams video, you get sub-$300 acer notebooks?? No matter what, in the end, it’s safe to say that Lil Kim is proponent of sexting.

Goofy Internet Rap Trendwatch: Rapper’s Beards On Twitter.

RIP to the originator and owner of one of the greatest beards.

Since I did this piece on rappers’ Twitter accounts last August, everyone’s joined the damn site and rappers being on Twitter is no longer something too unusual. No, the new thing is starting accounts for your beard. Case in point, the accounts that have been started for the following rappers’ beards:

Al Maman‘s facial growth wins this one by being attached to the best producer of the three, and for the following tweet:

Like, even tho im a beard, i shouldnt be put in the beard hop category with the other beards. I transcend that.

Speaking as someone who cannot muster more than a wispy mustache and some stubble, I feel the need to remind you that a beard will not make you a rapper. Sorry Joe.

Method Man interview with DJ Whoo Kid, Video.

As Knobbz can tell you, Method Man is a great interview.  Recently, Whoo Kid had a chance to talk to Meth, resulting in a really great interview. Frank Purdue better cut Meth a check for the major co-sign. Be in awe of moments like Whoo Kid asking Meth about nutrition, and Meth knowing who Tay Zonday is!!

Simeon Varlamov’s epic save on Sidney Crosby, Video.

More highlight reel material from the Caps. I was speechless when I saw this during the game today. That save was so vicious the DC Metropolitan Police issued a warrant for a robbery. Caps lead the best of 7 series, 1-0, lets change the history.
