DJ Quik & Kurupt – Cream In Ya Panties.

The funky, raunchy “Cream In Ya Panties” is only the tip of the iceberg. BlaQKout shot above and beyond my expectations with consistency on the mic from Kurupt and pitch-shifting, Travel-Channel-sampling madness from DJ Quik. I need to dig through Quik’s past production credits now. BlaQKout comes out this Tuesday.

Also, check the video for “9x’s Outta 10,” the album’s (best?) most off-kilter song.

I’m a huge DJ Quik fan, and I’ve damn near studied his entire catalog from front to back. Everything from the 1987 “red tape” to now…. and with that said i do NOT like this album with Kurupt.

For the last 2 or 3 years now Quik has been wanting to go the “club/fun” route, which is a direct result of all the bad things that happened in his life earlier this decade. It was almost a necessity for him to focus on the positive things, and he’s forcing this to come through in his music. The problem is it’s just doesn’t hold a candle to his earlier work.

If you guys want another example that might parallel this, think about Mary J. Blige’s career… when she was a depressed drug addict earlier in her career she made classics….and many of her fans had a hard time adjusting when she got clean and started making a different kind of music…. same thing can be said with Quik.

He’s always been great, but his “golden age” was 1998-2002 IMO.

with that said… my fav tracks on this album are “Fuck Y’all”, “9x out of 10”, “Moraccan Blues”, “Cream ya Panties” ….

    sorry for typing a novel…. I’m a Quik head to the bone…

I’m also a huge DJ Quik fan, and I think the above commenter is smoking crack. Quik’s production on this album is completely fucking off the rails. I mean, check any of the tracks… Morrocan Blues? That huge, reverb-soaked g-funk stomp, the skillfully flipped sample, and then the chorus drops and you get a catchy hook PLUS the vocal sample PLUS another horn sample, all locked in and playing off of each other, and all the other layers of… god, chopped vocal samples and keys and god knows what that open the whole thing up? That’s spectacular.

Was it really necessary to use the word retarded? I’m giving you the
benefit of the doubt here but certainly you know that the word
retarded used as slang is extremely hurtful to people living with
special needs. Before I had a child with a disability, I pretty much
was like you. I don’t know if I used the word but I certainly didn’t
flinch when I heard it. What’s the big deal, right? It is a huge
deal to people who have cognitive challenges. They get what you are
saying and they understand that you are mocking them, even if it’s
    unintentional.
Anyway, thank you for hearing me out.

    Diane,
I’ll try to be more mindful from now on. I also noticed that your comment is copied+pasted from elsewhere on the Internet. That doesn’t make it any less true, but it makes it a lot less legitimate and thoughtful.

    This is for “AK”,

You’re referring to his production, and I’m moreso referring to lyrics and quality of the songs overall…. not just production. I fully recognize Quik is one of the best producers in music period… but this is just NOT his best work. “Trauma” was the last album where Quik really lived up to his potential.

Are you really saying this album can stand up to Rhythmalism or Under Tha Influence?

This is in the “bottom 3” of his catalog…

I hear what everyone is saying…but the surprise to me is Quik dissing his faithful & loyal homies: Hi-C, AMG, KK & D (of 2nd II None) in “Fuck Ya’ll.” What’s up wit dat? As far as the album goes…it’s not bad! It has it’s gems! My favorite is “Do You Know,” where he uses the violin interlude of Tony Toni Tone’s “Anniversary.” CLEVER!!! This album is WAY BETTER than the one that leaked last year with Quik & AMG as The Fixxers! He went back to his funk roots! And even sounds like Robert Bacon on the guitars! That would be a hell of a reunion! Keep the funk comin’ Dave!
