Aside from his role in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, I’ve never been a big fan of Mos Def, but I’m feeling his newest album The Ecstatic — production-wise at least. These are two of the best songs on there. “Auditorium” has an elegant, dark Madlib beat and “Twilight Speedball,” which is co-produced by Chad Hugo, doesn’t exactly have the trappings of a Neptunes beat, but it has loud, militant horns that remind me of “Simon Says” by Pharoahe Monch.
My other passion in life is video games. E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) takes place this week in Los Angeles which means video game companies are making major announcements. The most fun part of game announcements (aside from actually playing said games) is the shiny new trailers. AaronM gave you a taste yesterday, but here’s the blowout. And I’m keeping it strictly Nintendo because that’s how I roll.
No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle. Game designer/auteur Suda 51’s , over the top, stylish action game. Jidaigeki meets punk rock meets miscellaneous American pop culture references. It’s OK to be a little confused.
I put the rest after the jump because it’s an assload of videos.
We tend to forget about remixes, which is a shame because, as AaronM’s Remix Tuesdays will show you, there are a lot of great tracks that get swept under the rug. I usually disregard compilations of old tracks, but I can make an exception for this project. Dillanthology 2: Dilla’s Remixes for Various Artists (self explanatory) is a great complement to Jay Stay Paid. Don’t think of it as a compilation, think of it as a collection of long lost Dilla tracks.
“Make it Fast” is a bonus track off Jay Stay Paid that only appears on the vinyl LP. Both Bun and Term’s verses are great; I can’t decided whose I like more. Remember, this isn’t the first time you’ve heard Bun B and Termanology on a Dilla beat. “Bloodsport” is an album track featuring Lil Fame that I’ve been listening to all day at full volume. I only wish the first beat (the beat changes halfway) went on longer. It’s one of the loudest, most intense Dilla beats out there. Jay Stay Paid as a whole is amazing, if we haven’tmade thatclear already.
Alchemist came out of left field with this one. Both the vocal sample and the tune that plays before the hook sound like samples Madlib would use. Bun B totally owns this track. No comparison.
Random Axe, for those not in the know, consists of Sean Price, Guilty Simpson and Black Milk. I’ve been waiting on music from this supergroup for over a year now, especially since Black promised we’d hear it soon. This shit right here is extraordinary – P kills it, unsurprisingly. Now we just need an entire Royce Da 5’9/Black Milk album and I’ll be set.
Wow..I can’t believe this isn’t a parody or a spoof. This video is so amazing for a few reasons, Most importantly… DMX AND HIS CREW ARE ON ROLLER SKATES. I assume they chose this to get their speed fix because the law won’t them allow to operate those Ruff Ryder bikes. I love the audio/mic quality sounding something out of an Al-Qadea tape, along with the Microsoft Word fonts. Dedication to hip hop: interviewing rappers at a roller rink. Rappers: If you’ve sold Gold in the past, ML is willing to meet you at a mini-golf course or bumper car track anywhere in the US.
This had me laughing this morning, Fab probably wasn’t this mad when his chain got snatched! For all you under the rock living cats, this is a parody of DameDash.
Freestyling ain’t dead, people. It’s great to see Duck Down signing so many talented younger cats. Rock kills it, but Skyzoo and Torae both come off nice. Shouts to DJ SAV*ONE for the footage.
More footage after the jump, featuring Buckshot, Naledge, Steele, and more.
