Looks like Strong Arm Steady (Phil Da Agony, Mitchy Slick, and Krondon) is about to unleash a lot of good music.
First, the crew is releasing Stoney Jackson, a collab album with Madlib. According to Stones Throw, the project will feature Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, Phonte, Planet Asia and lots of LA underground rappers.
However the Game-assisted banger that is “Trunk Music” comes from their upcoming album Arms and Hammers. Produced by Mars, “Trunk Music” rides a monstrous bass and a haunting xylophone loop. Arms and Hammers will follow Stoney Jackson.
New Camp Lo! It’s fantastic to see rappers actively work with producers who bring out the best in them, and Ski & Lowa is magic. Another Heist is the album, produced entirely by Ski out October 20th. Ski started as a rapper in Bizzie Boyz and Original Flavor, but it’s still a little surprising to hear him behind the mic.
Today marks the Kickoff of the The Soul Tour at the Kia Collective in DC which will feature Wale, Dan Deacon, Ponytail, and the Creepers rocking out through out the weekend in a warehouse in Washington DC.
Next weekend, Kia moves on to Philly where MGMT will be joined by The Drums, Amanda Blank, Popo, YACHT and Francis and the Lights.
All the shows are free except you need a ticket for the MGMT shows that you get by test driving a Kia at the respective Collective location Friday through Sunday from noon – 8pm.
ML will be in the building Space in DC on Friday night to catch the homie Wale, and on Sunday for MGMT.
DC Location: 3330 New York Ave, NE
Philly Location: 23rd Street Armory 22 South 23rd St
There are conflicting reports as to who produced this track. Xclusives Zone says it was DJ Premier andNah Right says Streetrunner. And it doesn’t help that this song isn’t on the track list for Street Hop.
Regardless, calling this track high-energy is an understatement. “New Money”strikes a rare chord; every line is overflowing with great rhymes at breakneck speeds and the beat feels like it’s constantly escalating.
The tagged up version of “Hood Love” that leaked in August was amazing as well, though it’s missing a verse from Joell Ortiz.
There’s a big difference between the vulgarity of Kool Keith and the vulgarity of, say, Three 6 Mafia. The first song on the upcoming Three 6 album contains a hook that goes “I Long dick her like uh! uh! uh!” Needless to say, last week’s listening session was more than a little awkward.
Kool Keith on the other hand is more subtly perverse. His sex anthems are usually childish and bizarre. Take this excerpt from Urb’s profile of Keith:
“The first time I went to a strip club, I had just come off tour. It was a club down south. I had a thousand singles and it was a slow night. I kept putting $10 in girls’ [g-strings] every five seconds. They kept asking me, ‘Do you want a dance?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t want a dance.’
“And it was buggin’ them out because it was kind of twisted. They were used to the regulars giving $10 total. They were more into me because the way I was doing it was weird. Sometimes, I had them all around me at the same time. I was like, ‘Here’s $10 because I like your outfit. It looks good.’ They’re like, ‘But do you want me to dance?’ I said, ‘Nah, don’t dance.’ I just got a kick out of it. It was just something done tactically; abnormal to their whole program. They said, ‘We never had a guy come in here and do that type of stuff. This is weird.’
Somewhere beneath the toilet humor and fetishes, there’s a childlike innocence to Kool Keith.
Tashan Dorrset was my jam and I’m amped for Bikinis N Thongs.
This track is off my favorite new producer Lee Bannon’s upcoming mixtape The Check Point which drops September 30. But the above Hey-Arnold!-on-shrooms artwork is for Bannon’s instrumental mixtape Big Toy Box. I’m excited for both.
Late pass please, but I didn’t really bother checking this out until I heard Ratatat was there along with Kid Cudi. Check out Evan Mast’s guitar solo which is crazy. Definitely one of my favorite tracks off Man On The Moon (In stores now). It’s crazy that rappers slept on working with Ratatat esp. when they’ve put out so muchheat in the past years.
So you are probably still asking where I’ve been hiding out, kinda lacking on the posting front? I’m actually working on bonding with my cat thanks to the advice this lady has blessed my life with. Be back soon. MAJOR WHISKER ALERT till then.
