Pause at 1:44 for a great close-up of a sweaty, pasty white, Peter-Parker-looking Mayer Hawthorne.
This is a great example of a video that takes a song to the next level. The video reveals Hawthorne’s ‘green-eyed love’ to be absinthe and the latter three quarters show him hallucinating, which relays his goofiness in a way that the song does not.
Skip to 8:40. Then watch Baby show off what is probably the biggest traveling collection of jewelry in rap (curated by Young Moola baby). Instead of a weed carrier like a lot of rappers, Baby has a jewels carrier. But why does he store what seems to be nearly a million worth of watches in a ziploc baggie? They do make watch cases, right?
Off the Forge Your Own Chains 45, a limited edition bonus that comes with Forge Your Own Chains Heavy Psychedelic Ballads and Dirges 1968-1974. Tell ‘em, Stones Throw:
With the same detailed, no-stone-unturned approach he used for deep funk on The Funky 16 Corners and Cold Heat, Egon’s Now-Again Records tackles beat-heavy global psychedelia with Forge Your Own Chains. Psychedelic records, long the mainstay of older, grizzled collectors, are giving up new ghosts in the hands of Egon and those of this generation.
Guilty Simpson pounds out a verse over the original (which is included separately) and then Oh No flips the beat on the second half.
I can’t say I know anything about global psychedelia. This wouldn’t be the first time a Stones Throw Record introduced me to a new genre of music.
If Khaled ever gets tired of making (making?) music, he could make a killing as one of those guys who stands on the street and tries to get you to eat at their restaurant.
Rockstar has shown time and time again that it has good taste in music. DJ Premier and DJ Green Lantern hosted two of GTA4’s radio stations; Oh No, MF Doom and Ghostface did the title track for Chinatown Wars; and Statik Selektah did the soundtrack for The Lost and Damned as well as a banger for Midnight Club: L.A.
So their collaboration with Timbaland on a music game should come as no surprise. Beaterator, which came out last week,is Rockstar’s first big foray into the music genre.
Rockstar is quick to point out that Beaterator isn’t a game in the traditional sense in that it doesn’t have goals and challenges like Rock Band or Guitar Hero. With Beaterator, Rockstar aimed to create a portable, powerful, user-friendly music creation suite.
I think People Under the Stairs just resurrected music videos. Here’s the backstory:
In March of 1980 two young rappers from los angeles appeared on the “Chikara Kurahashi Hit Station” variety show in Tokyo. It was the first time rap music had ever been performed in Asia and here is the lost tape of that performance. Enjoy this lost performance transferred from Beta – People Under The Stairs Trippin’ at the Disco.
Seriously, this might be the best music video in the last 10 years.
Off Dumhi’s Indian Summer EP, which drops October 15.
This track puts the drums from Paul Simon’s “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” to interesting use. I’ve included the OG as well as two other tracks that use the same drums so you can decide who flipped it best. (Hint: it was DJ Quik)
Wow, I guess these days it takes Slim Thug for me to check out The Daily Show for the fist time in eons. I actually watched this last night, if you didn’t, check it out below. So MANY quotables. This recession is hitting Thugga hard.
