3:33 – 333N4 (Del The Funky Homosapien & Tame One – Cheap Thrills).

The second single from the mysterious experimental outfit 3:33 is a surprising dose of malevolent boom bap, the vocal version of which appeared on Del The Funky Homosapien & Tame One’s 2009 album Parallel Uni-Verses. This is great for brooding and/or plotting grisly revenge.

Ghostpoet – Survive It.

Ghostpoest sounds like the pen name of a 16 year old who wears a cape to school and writes Lord of the Rings fan fiction. Thankfully, Ghostpoet is more pensive and mumbly than sulky and tragically misunderstood. “Survive It” even has a cutesy, uplifting hook that you’ll either love or hate. Ghostpoet is kind of like a sadder, more distant Wyclef. Pre-Shakira of course. Beats are dope too. The album is out now.

Daedelus – Tailor-Made (ft. Milosh) (TOKiMONSTA Remix).

Our favorite prolific West Coast beat-auteur Daedelus is back with a new album. Ninjatune describes Bespoke as “the work of a master tailor, for whom craftsmanship and quality is every bit as important, but no more important, than standing out from the crowd.” It comes out April 26 in the US and April 11 in the UK. For now, you can have the TOKiMONSTA remix of the single, “Tailor-Made.”

Daedelus is one of the most interesting and articulate interview subjects I’ve ever had. Capone-N-Noreaga are up there too.

MDNR – Cut Me Out.

I’ve been craving more MNDR since I heard her and Q-Tip make magic on “Bang Bang Bang.” Actually, I really caught the bug when I saw her on Letterman. Regardless, homegirl hits the electropop sweet spot. “Cut Me Out” is rhythmic, melodic and buzzing without all the cheese. Can’t wait for more.

Watch the making of and find tour dates after the break.

3:33 – 333EP-1.

If you’re looking for the polar opposite of the honey sweet dance remix from my last post, here some body-dumping music from an electronic group called 3:33. The mysterious and brooding instrumental track has windshield wipers, screeching tires, and a haunted piano. It’s best experienced by yourself at three in the morning in an abandoned factory, if you can manage it. EP-1 is due April 6.

Also check out the amazing “Mass” by Virtual Boy. His album Symphony No, None is also due out on AlphaPup this year.

The Knocks – Dancing With The DJ (’96 Bulls Remix).

Remember The Knocks? I do. They got shit popping with Big Boi at NYU. The hard-boiled outlaws behind Metal Lungies rarely delve into dance-pop (unless you count DJ01 listening to that Taio Cruz song before he goes to sleep every night), but we can make an exception when it’s extra funky, as is the case here.

Listen to or download the original, which borders on too sugary for my palate.

Beat Drop: Best of 2010 (Part 2).

Beat Drop: Best of 2010 (Part 1).

2010 was chock full of crazy shit. Teena Marie just died—as did Leslie Nielsen a few weeks back. LeBron made a deal with the devil’s advocate, Pat Riley. There were the Nashville floods no one heard about because of the BP oil spill. Of course, the economy continued to tank, with the politicians too busy circle-jerking each other to get anything of substance passed, besides a half-assed health bill. And even Tron disappointed, for having too much of “The Dude,” for chrissakes.

But there were some bright spots. Christopher Nolan continued to push the boundaries of film for the better. The World Cup justified AM drinking. And “The Dude” won an Oscar.

Kan-Yay!

As always, the (good) music never stopped. The year will best be remembered for Kanye’s second-semester ubiquity, from his tweets to the leaks to his almost-masterpiece. Eminem solidified his comeback, with the only album (besides Taylor Swift) that sold well this year. Dame Dash continued his own resurrection, too, cleverly hopping on the Curren$y bandwagon. Janelle Monae finally released a full-length, which was arguably the year’s best. Big Boi proved his independence worthwhile. B.o.B. went pop, which is good for him, I guess. And Jay-Z rapped over a Pete Rock beat. God is good, sometimes.

Janelle Monae Secret Showcase-3

Special thanks to Devin Chanda of Scheme Engine and The Smoking Section for blessing us with the introduction.

If you listened closely, you caught a lot of great music this year. If not, we’ve got you. We gathered our friends to tell us their five favorite beats of the year. DJ Eclipse got to pick six because he’s special. You can find part two here. Forming today’s musical brain trust we have…
