The Audible Doctor connected with New York rapper Sene for this soulful cut off his EP The Crackers Vol. 1 which drops tomorrow. The Doctor’s production sounds more polished than ever. The expertly woven soulful JoJo (thank you, reader who is smarter than me) sample is a refreshing change from the more aggressive boom bap the Brown Bag AllStars are known for.
Listen to this amazing track from New York artist Adam Warlock. Backed by live musicians, Warlock raps a stream of consciousness over a constantly changing free jazz/electronic beat. It sounds like some Def Jux shit, but with the added richness of a live band. Definitely looking forward to more from Mr. Warlock.
Edit: A most wise colleague points out that Adam Warlock is rhyming over “Tocatta” by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Buyer beware.
The name Laws may not mean anything to you, but hip-hop bloggers will recognize the name from the 20 emails the Tampa-based rapper sends every day. A day rarely goes by without a reminder that Laws is in the studio, or that he has a song on the radio, or that he has a mixtape dropping in two weeks, or that he just ate a pastrami sandwich. Some might call this perseverance, but spamming someone’s inbox with worthless content is more likely to get you ignored than noticed.
Ironically, Laws didn’t even email me the song that finally got me to listen to him. I found this on Nah Right and only listened to it because it’s produced by DJ Khalil. Maybe Khalil gave Laws a beat so he would stop emailing him.
I thought to myself, Am I really going to post this shit? It’s a great song, but I run the risk of getting twice as many Laws emails in the future. Such is the hip-hop blogger’s dilemma.
But at the end of the day, DJ Khalil’s beat banged too hard. Laws, you win.
“No Wheaties” is exactly the smoked out, laid back music you would expect from Curren$y and friends. Big K.R.I.T.’s project K.R.I.T. Wuz Here which drops April 5.
The title suggests this is a Southern sex romp, but “One Night Stand” is about finding that special lady and holding onto her. Beanz N Kornbread’s summery beat sounds like a cross between Battlecat and Pimp C.
I’m an asshole by nature, but a gentleman too.
I beat up bitch niggas, but I promise to be gentle with you.
You miscreants could learn a thing or two about class from Z-Ro.
New Amerykah Part One‘s mind-blowing sound came from Erykah Badu’s squad of ace underground hip-hop producers (Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins). So it’s surprising to see the quintessential mainstream rapper on the first song off New Amerykah Part Two. But the song still bangs, in a random Erykah Badu kind of way.
Stones is the cousin of Buckshot from Black Moon, who’s got a dope gravelly voice with flow similar to his sibling. I’m skeptical of J Dilla tributes in general but this is pretty nice. Over “In The Night/While You Slept (I Crept)” off Jay Stay Paid.
CNN are the latest New York rappers to revisit the album that made them who they are today. Raekwon, Fat Joe, Kurious, and Sadat X are some of the rappers who have made or are making “sequels” to their debut albums. This is one trend I can get behind, because it usually means a return to that grimy New York boom bap.
“Thug Planet” is a hundred times better than the Ron Browz-produced trash CNN tried to pass as NY rap on their last album. This is the first leak off “The War Report 2.”
We wrote about RADix last year, but the little known duo is going to turn a lot more heads now that they’re working on an album with Statik Selektah. Is there anyone that Statik isn’t doing an album with?
