Peep this tape of obscure southern acts. The rappers on this mixtape are mostly unknowns, with the exception of Freddie Gibbs, Pill, G-Side, and Jackie Chain, but I think I’m going to be checking for most of these guys very soon.
A perfect slice of rolling, summery funk backed by a killer Big Boi verse. Bit confused why they’re leaking this now; “Tightrope” was clearly made for BBQ season. Janelle’s debut on Bad Boy, The Arch-Android, drops on May 18.
BTW, go see Janelle live if you ever get the chance, she puts on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Hit the jump for some upcoming tour dates.
Tanya Morgan occupies a space in hip-hop right in the middle of the tough guys, the traditionalists, and the wanna-be Kanyes. No gimmicks, they just like making music. So give Donwill of TM your ear for a minute. He’s not a douchebag like most of the other rappers we write about. The mixtape is a preview of his album Don Cusack in High Fidelity.
For all our harping about vapid lyrics and materialism, sometimes a song about rims is just right. Call me a hypocrite, but hey, this is hip-hop. Gotta love the double time flow. This comes from Alley Boy’s street album Definition Of Fuck Shit, dropping Saturday.
Don’t pay attention to the cheap cover art. Terrace Martin’s Valentine’s Day EP is all kinds of funky. The Lover’s Edition is a departure from his West Coast bangers. Terrace teams with a few rappers, but mostly lesser known singers for eight songs of fine-wine-and-satin-sheets shit.
More heat by the 5’O Clock Shadowboxers, who I’ve been raving about for a minute. “No Resolution 2” is sequel to a track off their album The Slow Twilight, supplemented by some slight tweaks to the beat and stellar verses by an all-star cast of Philly underground rappers. This is a preview of their upcoming Broken Clocks EP dropping later this month.
X.Obama, same campaign. Off the excellent 1.1.10 mixtape, which we’ve posted about already. Cop and listen, I’m already prepared to call it one of the best mixtapes of ’10.
Debate is raging on Twitter over the exclusion of dark skin girls from a video for a song called “Pretty Girls.” Come on, Wale. Didn’t you listen to Del?
I missed the Freddie Gibbs/Pill hype train, but I dig the ultra-vivid street talk on “Thoughts.” Pill is definitely a lyricist. The banging guitar-synth beat helps too. This song comes from Pill’s upcoming mixtape 1140: The Overdose. He’s also working on his debut album for Asylum Records.
Extremely laid back jawn from previously featured Tennessee rapper All Star. Off All Star and Burn One’s mixtape Renaissance Gangster which drops February 15.
