The only regret that we have about this cover is that it took us 10 days to hear about it. As much as we love Queen Bey (and don’t we all worship at the altar of Bey?), we might love The Weeknd’s take on “Drunk in Love” even more. Can we say that? Too late. This cover sounds like Abel Tesfaye circa his first two mixtapes… which is a great thing. we were underwhelmed with the release of his first album, Kiss Land, but this sounds more reminiscent of his tried and true crooning that will more than likely get any girl within earshot to lose track of all rational thought. Listen below and prepare to keep this on repeat all day (week? month? year?).
That R&B song with the random Kanye verse on it got a mega remix with the assistance of Freddie Gibbs who is now that much closer to being one of seventeen guests on Cruel Winter.
Here’s a formula that isn’t exploited enough nowadays: classic hip-hop beat co-opted by an R&B singer with a verse from the best rapper of the day. This is way better than anything the Grammys called a “Rap/Sung Collaboration” this year.
Update: Here it is again without Funkmaster Flex screaming on it.
I know Cocaine 80s is No I.D.’s experimental side project where he does the stuff he can’t do with Big Sean, but “Fly Ass Pisces” could have put a middling R&B singer the map.
If you’re going to be in LA this Sunday and you’re cultured, check out what promises to be an amazing tribute to 70s soul. Names that pop out: Miguel-Atwood Ferguson, Seu Jorge, Questlove. Someone tell Andrew Lojero that New York needs some hot buttered soul in between Bieber concerts.
#BEEN #TRILL is a DJ/Creative collective that is affiliated with some guy named Kanye. As a part of the launch of their clothing line collabo with cool clothing heavyweight Stussy the crew cooked up a very smooth mix with #rare edits/remixes of everything from Jamie XX to 2 Chainz. This has pretty much been on loop since Thanksgiving. My personal highlight is this Jessie Ware remix. If you know what that Are You That Somebody remix is, drop knowledge in the comments.
I picked this little gem up yesterday at Unique Thrift.
We all remember the classic film; but what about the album it inspired? This late 90’s comp included the likes of Will Smith, Jermaine Dupri, Snoop Dogg, Ginuwine, a young Alicia Keys, The Roots, D’Angelo, Trey Lorenz (his name will be the answer to a jeopardy question one day), Nas, Emoja, ATCQ, an early Destiny’s Child, 3T, De La Soul, Buckshot LeFonque, and the legendary Danny Elfman.
