Alabama hip-hop hit the ground running this year. The main success story is Yelawolf, who landed an Interscope deal and has everyone awaiting his next move. But there’s another Alabama rapper with a major label deal and he’s even more of a black sheep than Yela: Jackie Chain, a towering half white, half Korean with a golden brown mane of hair that hangs down to his collar. Did I mention his name is Jackie Chain?
As far as subject matter goes, his new tape falls in the Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa category (call it Lifestyle Rap) with a touch of Rawse-esque (Rawsian?) excess. But Bama production outfit Block Beattaz takes Who Da Mane to another level with futuristic Southern bangers that beg to be played loud. Hopefully his major label debut I ain’t Slept in Weeks will be bigger, louder, and just as weird.
So is this a Four Loko-themed parody of the Isleys’ “For the Love of You” or is it just a regular old sample? Hip-hop often walks that line where you’re not sure how seriously you’re supposed to take it.
“The Four Loko Theme” deserves props because it’s clearly in the “Bed Intruder”/Numa Numa lane and yet the song is actually really dope. As Steady Bloggin’ put it, “it’s smooth as hell. Way better than it has any right to be, considering it’s essentially a novelty song.” But then there are some nagging questions: why can’t can’t you enjoy a parody the same way you would any other song? And can you call “Big Poppa” a parody of “Between the Sheets” if you think some of the lyrics are funny?
But I’m sure much smarter people have already tackled this question. Footage from the November 17 Four Loko vigil in Union Square after the jump.
“Ready Set Go” first appeared on T.I.’s Fuck a Mixtape where No I.D.’s ominous, refined beat stood in stark contrast to the rest of the tape’s big clumsy anthems. The track sounds like Jay-Z could have passed over it in favor of the less sinister Swizz Beatz-produced single “On To The Next One.” Both songs feature incomprehensible chopped up vocals, but No I.D. turns his batch into a menacing incantation.
Cliche as they are, Motion Family’s black and white visuals actually work well here. Killer Mike prowls the city’s crevices by night, shaking down fools for money. He and T.I. revel in the darkness, relishing every opportunity to grimace at the viewer.
Slim Thug’s album is as dope as his tweets are funny. Tha Thug Show is out November 30.

Check after the break to see Slim Thug discover the “Runaway” sample.
People Under the Stairs need to open a rap video consulting firm. Remember when I spazzed and called their last video the best of the decade? The “Beer” video is part sitcom and part college beer-B-Q, and it’s all b-boy’ed up. It was filmed in Fort Collins and Boulder, Colorado and also at the Odell Brewery.
This whole weekend I have been laid up sick (my cold is perfectly coinciding with next level/amazing weather occurring right out side of my sunroom). There was one good thing about this however; I was able to work my fingers into tip-top shape with the TV remote buttons and clicking of the computer mouse. Now when I wasn’t watching some hockey or playoff beisbol, Kanye West seemed to have my attention on either the TV or the computer screen. First, Kanye West premiered his artsy film, Runaway (pure coincidence the single shares the same title!), set to the score of his new album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I took the movie as a canvas to show off the new(ish) music, and for that purpose the beautifully shot visuals worked. What I enjoyed more was the post-movie interview he did with Sway of MTV. The interview was unedited/live which showed off Ye’s train of thought and his passion for his work. When the interview was ending, Sway blew up the spot, by mentioning his surprise appearance he was going to do later in Brooklyn. Covering his face when he heard Sway spoil the surprise, Kanye’s reaction made the whole interview worth watching.
