Chalk this one up as another classic for DJ Premier and a career highlight for Joell Ortiz. The paranoia and urgency of the song are incredible.”Project Boy” sounds like boom bap’s last hurrah.
The video for “Janelle Monáe’s “Tightrope” is a rare example of a video enhancing the song. I don’t think I’ll ever listen to this song again without thinking of the crazy dance party in the video. Monae & co. can move! Grab the audio and give it some burn.
As you can guess as soon as you saw the title, I can’t getenough of this stuff. ABC News was able to dig up Merton for an interview. If you are too lazy to watch the two key facts you need to know is the next video is coming out in a few days, and video #1 is the highest rated youtube of all time. Now, stop being lazy and get edumacated about this meme.
It looks like the “Our Dreams” video got more time and attention from Def Jam than the actual album. Said Method Man,
Def Jam put a rush on it. We didn’t have a lot of time to work on it. We recorded with no budget. It is what it is. We did this for the fans. It felt good to get in the studio with Rae and Ghost. The future looks bright.
That would be why most of the leaks from Wu-Massacre sound like crap. Great video directed by Rik Cordero nonetheless. Grab the audio here.
The Terrace Martin produced banger “Upside Down” (mp3 here) was Malice n Wonderland‘s single redeeming track. The fact that Snoop Dogg is capable of making West Coast debauchery records that don’t sound recycled makes it even more sad that he chooses to make throwaway pop rap with Soulja Boy and The-Dream.
The video is clipped from the movie that comes with Malice N Wonderland (hip-hop marketing gimmick #67). It’s great: there’s smoking, drinking, chicks making out, and Snoop gets a contact lap dance. Considering the primary medium for music videos has become the Internet, I think more videos should have naked boobs in them. Just my thought.
Sidebar: What’s with the sci-fi shit? Snoop has something implanted in his hand and a force field blocks the bullets at the end. This movie looks dumber than your average rapper-helmed movie.
You may remember last week I posted the Chat Roullete Piano Improv video? Well, a lot of the internets theorists were saying that Merton in the video was Ben Folds. It’ wasn’t, but all of this buzz didn’t go unnoticed by Mr. Folds, who decided to perform a hilarious tribute/rendition of the Chat Roullete Improv Piano thing live during a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In late December I found out about a little site called ChatRoulette, a site which pairs you with random strangers in the world that have video cameras and have nothing better to do with their lives than talk to strangers (if you didn’t know this you might live under a rock, age can’t be an excuse because old dudes stay posted up on CR). I wish I documented all of my interactions on there, I’ve had Frat Brahs curse me out for a few minutes to talking to Mainland China residents (who were wearing heavy winter coats indoors) about Yao Ming. I’m still trying to convince KnobbzXL to give it a whirl, I think it would transform his life. Anyways, this video is one of the most hilarious things I’ve seen in a bit. It’s some guy serenading random people on the piano, and doing it with amazing wit. I had to play it back a few times (I mean you guys probably don’t remember when I wrote a full paragraph about something, right?!). I hope more videos come out soon.
After the jump I’ve added a few things CR related that I’ve come across over the past few months you might have missed.
Snoop Dogg collected a small contingent of West Coast artists for a relatively short mixtape that’s low on filler. Snoop using his international pop star status to support aspiring West Coast rappers is nothing new. Previously, he’s cosigned Terrace Martin and Crooked I. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement: Snoop gives them a weighty cosign and they keep him relevant to the core hip-hop audience.
We Da West, Volume 1 features Kurupt, Daz, Bad Lucc, Problem, Tha Twinz, Nipsey Hussle, and The Hustle Boyz.
Watch the video for the tape’s opener after the jump.
Danny B rocking his typically half-gully/half-goofy style over a cold, creeping beat produced by Quelle of Crown Nation, who’s done work with Danny before.
Here’s another joint off Danny’s upcoming album, The Hybrid., “New Era”, produced by Nick Speed.
