Remix Tuesdays – Pete Rock & CL Smooth

“Searching” is a 1995 single by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, released just prior to the duo’s breakup . It was remixed and re-released in ’96 as a promotional 12′.

The original version can be found on the group’s second album, The Main Ingredient, but the remix was only made available in CD format on the import-only Rare Tracks compilation.

Both versions are produced by Pete Rock. The lyrics are the same in both versions, with the exception of a new chorus added to the remix.  Pete does a call-and-response, reciting the following lyrics with CL’s sampled vocals  answering the first two lines. After that, a female vocalist answers Pete’s lines.

Let me break the chorus down, just so I have an excuse to type the word “sextafied.”

PR: Searching to find the one and have fun

CL: I’m thirsty for your love, sugar can I get a sip?

PR: Sextafied women who rank from 10 to 1, honey

CL: You know what it takes and you know how I want it

PR: Do you like it? (Yeah…)

Do you want it? (Yeah…)

Well, if you got it, why not flaunt it? (Hell yeah!)

Searching…

The original instrumental is butter smooth, with sultry female backing vocals and warm vibes. Sample vocals chant “searching” on the chorus and the backing vocalist plays off the samples. Pete adlibs all over the track, as he is wont to do.

The remix will please hard-rocks who thought the original was too soft, flipping the summery feel of the original into a much darker sounding instrumental. Pete employs an eerie string loop that should sound familiar to any 90s rap scholar and dark sounding vibes. He utilizes crisper, harder drums than he did on the OG and brings in muted horns every few bars. Pete drops the sampled “searching” vocals at the end as the beat fades out.

I respect that Pete & CL could pull off a credible ballad in such a hardcore-minded period of hip hop, and both versions of “Searching” are gems.

Large Professor’s The LP finally sees retail release?

I just visited the Fat Beats online store and saw this on the frontpage. The distributor is listed as Geffen, and the site describes it as:

“Never heard before, heat from Large Professor. This album was shelved in 1993 and includes unreleased and rare joints.”

It seems to be a repackaging of the version of The LP that was packaged with preorders of 1st Class, with a slightly altered track listing that adds the song “Have Fun”.

Track listing on this version is listed below:

1 Sunrise

2 One Plus One

3 Hard

4 Spacey

5 For My People

6 Hungry

7 Get Off The Bullshit

8 Funky 2 Listen 2

9 Dancing Girl

10 Have Fun

11 Ijuswannachill

12 The Mad Scientist

It’s missing some of the tracks that have been circulating on bootleg pressings of the record, but I do like the cover more than the Dune inspired original, pictured below next to the cover that inspired it.

Is this legit? Could someone ask the Mad Scientist for me? If you’re interested, take a look at the FatBeats listing and tell me what you think.

While you’re at it, visit Robbie’s spot to pick up a few of the tracks omitted from the release

Tyga on KarmaloopTV, video + Bonus RJD2 interview.

RJD2 should probably be the “featured” video in this entry (musically, RJD2>Tyga), but that interview has been floating in my mailbox for way too long (better late than never right?). Anyway, Tyga is a “hotter” name at the moment that’s signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money.

Part 2 & RJD2 after the break.

Blu – That’s One In A Row.

The only rapper I really can’t get enough of right now is Cali’s Blu. I dig him so much that when I heard an unfamiliar (new?) Blu joint on Mark Ronson’s Authentic Shit radio show, I had to snatch it. Not only is Blu consistently dope, he’s always changing up his sound. This song has him sounding darker than usual over some spacey synths.

Blu – That’s One in a Row (CDQ/Drops)
Blu’s anti-spacebar MySpace says he’s prepping something called JayJay and doesn’t give any other details. He’s also steady touring and hitting up New York with everybody’s other favorite rapper, Wale.

Ex$pendable Trailer.

Yet another Hip Hop movie so gully it doesn’t have an IMDB entry. If you’ve been fiending for more Omillio Sparks acting since the (unfairly) non-award winning State Property films, fiend no more friends. Ex$pendable is here.

For you eagle eye movie watchers, Gillie Da Kid makes a cameo as a Security Guard in the film (Oscars can’t be far behind), but it still has far to go to reach ML’s favorite movie starring a rapper(s)-status.

Metal Lungies @ Bonnaroo, the Big Recap.

(The whole ML flickr stash here)

ScottieL has finally recovered and sent in this lengthy & ML flavor filled report from Bonnaroo:

I just got back from Bonnaroo at 3:00 on Tuesday morning, and after a long weekend of listening to music, dancing, partying, and doing everything else there was to do (I’ll call it Roo’ing), I’m still exhausted. Half of me wants to crawl into bed and sleep for a week, but the other half wishes I was still in Manchester, Tennessee. I want to thank my friends at Metal Lungies for giving me the opportunity to attend this festival for the first time, and for a helluva weekend. I have heard things from friends who have attended Bonnaroo in the past, but nothing really prepares you for it until you actually experience it firsthand. In my day-by-day breakdowns, I’ll do my best to review the music, as well as describe some of the other activities, people, and overall unique atmosphere that makes Bonnaroo different from anything I’ve ever been a part of.

*****

We reached our destination of Manchester around 6:00 on Friday morning after a relatively uneventful (I did get a carton of cigarettes for under $30 in Virginia) twelve-hour drive. Me and three of my friends, we’ll call them Dolla Bill, Mitya, and S-Money, were packed into a tiny Honda Accord stuffed with backpacks, suitcases, tents, blowup dolls, etc. As we drove on the main road through town, we noticed signs up outside most of the stores and restaurants welcoming Bonnaroo goers. We had finally arrived.

We met up with our buddy Drosci, who drove down yesterday and had been waiting for us to get there. He told us that his cousin, who helped set up Bonnaroo as well as many other festivals, hooked it up with guest camping passes for all of us. The passes allowed us to camp right by Centeroo, the main area of Bonnaroo. I didn’t realize how crucial that was until later after seeing the distance between the regular campgrounds and Centeroo. Let’s just say it was a hike. We picked up our wristbands at the local Holliday Inn and headed toward our campsite.

As we drove in to the site we were stopped by security guards, who checked to see if we had a guest parking pass. They saw the pass and waved us through. We pulled into the lot and the first thing I noticed was a long line of people waiting to use a shower. Showers at Bonnaroo??I’m really starting to feel like a big shot with these passes. We parked and set up our tents. Now it’s time for the fun to begin! Well, fuck, after a little nap, I’m tired.

I woke up fully energized and ready to kick Bonnaroo’s ass. Dolla Bill, also a Bonnaroo virgin, joined me for a walk around the grounds. Centeroo can best be described as a psychedelic fair complete with an assortment of stages, tents, shops, food stands, a ferris wheel and a fountain shaped like a mushroom (remember kids, just say no). It was still pretty early so there wasn’t any music yet, but the place was alive and there was more than enough going on to keep busy. We passed by a stand called the MLB Road Show, complete with a batting cage and a radar detector to test how fast you can throw. The high speed was in the mid- 80’s. Damn, I didn’t know Jamie Moyer was going to be here! I thought about giving it a shot, but the line was pretty long and I didn’t want to embarrass myself.

I was getting hungry so I grabbed a $10 burrito and wolfed it down. Definitely the worst thing I had the whole time I was there, it would come back to haunt me later. Overall, the food was decent in Centeroo. I recommend the kabobs or the pizza. There’s something about paying $5 for a slice that makes it that much better. If you’re looking for more variety and better prices and don’t mind walking, your best bet is to make the trek up to 3rd street, or Shakedown Street as it’s more commonly known. Shakedown Street is full of vendors selling food, clothing, glass, as well as whatever other products hippies sell. Also, there are just a lot of strange people around, and it’s always good for a laugh. One of my friends said they saw a topless girl get tackled into a puddle of mud by a cop, while she screamed “I want my hoverboard! Give me back my hoverboard!” Unfortunately, there was no hoverboard in sight.

Kicking It, documentary about the Homeless World Cup.

If you have been reading ML for long enough you know we have been intrigued about the Homeless World Cup going a few years back. When you combine that with our appreciation for documentaries, Kicking It, a documentary about the Homeless World Cup is something we are naturally all over. Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis (his blog is where we found out about the project) produced the film. The movie is in limited release in DC at the moment and will air on ESPN in September.
