Here’s the new surprisingly solid EP from Kidz in the Hall, which according to okayplayer, they recorded last month while they were on tour. It’s 13 spare tracks, which is a lot for an EP. The EP features Naledge’s best performance yet and serves as a prelude to their album The Land of Make Believe, which drops March 9.
Here’s the video for the only listenable song on the Triple C’s album. Triple C’s is a group comprised of Rick Ross and his goon squad. This song has a cool West Coast vibe and a worthwhile Game verse and the video has some great action shots of Rawse’s beard.
Up and coming rapper Koncrete just sent me this video he shot for his new song Exhibit K (a remix of Jay Electronica’s Exhibit B). He’s a fellow DMV person and a rapper that is definitely worth discovering. He sounds a bit like Big Pun, but with a heavy New Orleans (his hometown) influence. Check out his MySpace and be sure to look out for his upcoming mixtape Koncrete is ‘Well Grounded”.
You may remember Muhsinah as the singer who laced one of Exile’s Radio instrumentals. Today, she hops on another great Left Coast producer’s beat.
This is the first time I’ve heard Flying Lotus produce an R&B track, and the outcome is nothing short of amazing. It’s dark, soulful, and deep all at once. I only wish it were longer.
The song comes from Muhsinah’s album The Oscillations: Triangle.
Boston-born New York-based boom bap producer extraordinaire Statik Selektah took some time off to talk to us about The Pre-Game EP, his album 100 Proof (The Hangover), and the 5,000 other projects he’s working on.
Statik talks about his album’s dark sound, his record collection, and his upcoming single with Wale, Bun B, and Colin Munroe.
ML: Why did you decide to release an EP in advance of the album?
Statik: Originally, the album was supposed to come out in November and it got pushed back to February. I just really wanted to get something out this year for everyone’s that’s been waiting for it. So I took a couple songs off the album and did a couple new songs and came up with an EP so there’s something out at Christmas time.
ML: Why was the album delayed?
Statik: ‘Cause of the bullshit that goes on in this industry. There’s all these new processes with all this digital shit now where like certain distributors can’t get it in time. The way retail is now, there’s so much music being distributed that if you put out CDs on certain days, like, Best Buy won’t take it. There’s so much politics in it. And basically February 2 was the first date I could have that I knew my project was gonna get pushed the right way. ‘Cause, we could’ve put it out this year, but it would’ve got swept under the rug with everything coming out. Retail wasn’t gonna support it the way I need it to.
Flying Lotus is the only person who can get me to listen to Lil Wayne. The LA beatsmith remixed “I Feel Like Dying” and “A Milli” with mind-blowing results. Listen and freak out.
It’s been awhile since I’ve heard a mixtape that I can listen to from beginning to end. Chip Tha Ripper’s The Cleveland Show is cohesive and entertaining from beginning to end, though it runs a little long (27 tracks). It’s all slow stoner jams like “Fat Raps.”
