Ex-Rocafella singer Rell is on his way to becoming R&B’s Nate Newton.

What did Nate Newton due once his football career with the cowboys wrapped up? He started transporting that green getting caught twice with 213 pounds and then with 175. Now comes Rell, the former Rocafella singer, who hasn’t been really heard from on the music scene in a moment, by getting arrested with an impressive 50 pounds (for the R&B division of weed stashes). I hope he can shoot for 80 pounds for his next arrest by those pesky boys in blue.. or black if you’re “major”.

New York Times hooks up college students and professors.

This has been lingering in the drafts for a bit, for some reason so.. I don’t mean to sound like a PSA but I love reading newspapers in my spare time, and I’m talking about the actual paper that leaves your fingers black not the .com sister sites. But sometimes the .com’s are a lot of more convenient. One of the best news sites is the New York Times. If you are in college or if you are a professor in college, you are eligible for free access to their Time Select which offers a bunch of exclusive, high quality content as well as access to their crazy deep archives. Sign up here, it’s $50 a year value. No strings are attached.

VIRB-What MySpace should be.

I just came across VIRB, its a new social website which does what MySpace should be doing. All in a stylish and non-clunky environment. The complete opposite of what MySpace was and has become. Now I know MySpace is crazy huge, that’s the only reason ML (and a lot of other org/bands/people) are even on it. With VIRB, hopefully over time there can be a migration to a much more pleasant web experience. They have a limited amount of sign ups per day, so if you don’t get in, drop us an e-mail at djlethal01 at metallungies dot commizle and we’ll hook you up with an invite. Don’t forget to friend us here and spread the word.

Stealing news on Ghostface + Dr. Dre from Pitchfork is fun.

Ghostface was mentioned earlier by BBoy so I thought this would fit in nicely. Not only is Ghostface getting cameos on NBC’s sitcom 30 Rock he is also starting his own Poker website, GFKPoker.com. He is a rapper that I feel like can’t do anything wack or doesn’t fit his persona if he tried. While I don’t know what success the Poker site will have it defiantly adds to his aura of being out there/random/innovative.

This clip (shows him only getting onstage not more of the performance, but you get the idea) is from his 1st cameo, the 2nd is due in early March;

a show that gives Ghost cameos? Maybe I should start watching it.

The equivalent of ‘Detox’?

In Dr. Dre news the doc is apparently is going to start producing movies, and not some straight to video, 1000 copies made minor league ish. He is going major with New Line Cinema. Can you imagine a horror re-cutting of the ‘The Wash‘?. Also Klaxons (a UK band who I’ve been digging as of late) wants to work with him. All of this is nice and all but, if this affects the release of Detox… then it officially becomes the Duke Nukem Forever of rap.

Grammy Prediction List (2007)

Its 40 mins before the show and here it goes. My predicted……not necessarily hopeful, winners for the awards that have no bearing on the music I listen to.

RECORD OF THE YEAR- Mary J Blige (Be Without You)

It’ll be no suprise to any of us. I mean shit was on the radio for like 300 weeks right? She will cry in her acceptance speech. Dr. Dre will be thanked.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR- Dixie Chicks (Taking the Long Way)

It will happen and it will be the most political (yet still southern girl next door) acceptance speech you have ever heard. Dr. Dre may not be thanked.

SONG OF THE YEAR- James Blunt (You’re Beautiful)

I hated this one and I really think Corinne Bailey Ray should win this one. But she won’t. Standard acceptance speech. Timbaland may be shouted out (just a feeling).

BEST NEW ARTIST- Corinne Bailey Ray

She’ll get it, she deserves it, but all the non-VH1 Soul viewers will wonder who the hell she is. Bjork will be thanked.

BEST FEMALE R&B VOCAL PERFORMANCE- MJB (Be Without You)

She held that note on the end for a while. Mary got this shit. I mean come on its not like “Ring The Alarm” was the best vocal performance. India Arie will be shouted out.

BEST R&B ALBUM- Prince (3121)

Its tough competition, but Prince will take this one. The words Peace and Love will be mentioned in his acceptance speech. His outfit will be outrageous. God will be thanked.

BEST POP PERFORMANCE BY A DUO OR GROUP WITH VOCAL- Death Cab For Cutie (I Will Follow You Into the Dark)

Indie heads will go crazy for this and then angry. Soon their fans will be split up by new fans, and those who “liked them before they got big.” Fall Out Boy all over again. Random Indie Execs will be thanked.

BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM- James Blunt (Back To Bedlam)

A crime will be committed twice tonight. The crime? Giving James Blunt an award. No one should be thanked.

BEST ROCK ALBUM- Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Stadium Arcadium)

I thought the album was kinda weak. But Neil Young has enough acclaim. George Clinton will be thanked.

BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE BY A DUO OR GROUP WITH VOCAL- The Fray (How to Save a Life)

Another one of those songs that was on the radio for 10,000 weeks. ________ from marketing will be thanked.

BEST ROCK SOLO VOCAL PERFORMANCE- I Have NO IDEA!

It will either be Tom Petty or Neil Young. The winner will be decided by MORTAL KOMBAT! Shao Khan will be thanked.

BEST RAP SOLO PERFORMANCE- T.I. (What You Know)

Its not like Mos Def or Lupe Fiasco is gonna win. God and Dj Drama will be shouted out. One member of his crew will be wearing this.

BEST RAP/SUNG COLLABORATION- Justin Timberlake ft. T.I. (My Love)

All the rest of the nominees are club bangers, sex manuals, or Jay-Z features. Plus… this shit was hot. Timberland will be thanked and may even take the mic.

All the Country Awards will be taken by the Dixie Chicks (Political Move) and maybe one will go to Bon Jovi (who sings country now?).

Hell do I know about gospel?

Its starting soon. Lets see how I do…

The Lungie Awards (Part 2)

I promised I would, so here it is….

Most Shameful Hip-Hop Moment in 2006: Flavor of Love
This shit had me genuinely disgusted for the entire year. How could a television station that aired such an epic documentary And You Don’t Stop be responsible for this travesty. They took a man who was cemented in hip-hop legend and exposed him for the drug-addicted clown that he has become. This shit didn’t come as a complete surprise to me though, VH1 has been dragging their viewers through a cultural mud-pit for quite a while now with their recent line of celebreality bullshit. I still love that white rapper show though……crack.

Coolest Company to Get Into Hip-Hop: The Folks Over at [adult swim] With the release of that Dangerdoom album in 2005 I thought AS would continue strictly cartoon-based raps. But no! They came with the shock of the year and released a compilation called Chrome Children featuring artists on Stone’s Throw Records. The album is a heat-rock and features some supurb indy hip-hop and some fantastic beats (Dilla even shows up). This is a must cop-album for 2006 and I look forward to any future AS + Hip-Hop collabos.

Biggest Anticipation With no Pay-Off: Papoose
This dude has been dropping hot shit for a while but still no album? He has songs, he has hype, he has major label backing. So why no LP? I really hope dude drops in 2007. Probably won’t sell though……no gimmick.

More to come. Really.

The Lungie Awards: Part 1

Really, its for the best.

This is plain and simple, the stuff that mattered to me in rap music this year. Now, if only we had trophies………

Best DJ Premier impression of 2006: Pharell on Clipse- Ride around Shining

When I heard this one I really thought I had accidentally switched to Gangstarr. That whole cut-up groan break. Insane. Pharell killed this.

Team to watch in 2007: Ghostface and MF Doom.

These two dudes really put it down in 2006. Doom is a great producer and his style fits Ghost perfectly. I really do wanna see these guys do an album together, but I’ll be happy with some more joints like this one from More Fish.

Best Sing-a-Long Album: E-40- My Ghetto Report Card

To be exact I only mean Tracks 12-19 (in order). Starting with the hilarious getthefuckon.com (skit) all the way to Bun-B’s epic verse at the end of She Say She Loves Me, this is pure rap goodness on record. Next time your driving around aimlessly with friends, turn on those songs for instant hilarity. You’ll know what I mean when your lip synching to Bosko while your friend plays al kapone.

Weirdest Sample in the Weirdest Place: Pitbull- Hey You Girl (samples) The B-52’s- Rock Lobster

This is truly what made the new Pitbull album for me. The fact that he would sample one of my favorite songs from one of the funniest bands ever is truly a testament to his desperation genius.

Best Producer Genre Crossover: Timbaland with Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado

I have always thought Timbo is one of the best producers and I am hella-glad he’s decided to go back to making pop songs full-time. Since Aaliyah died I never thought there would be another steady stream of Timbo pop. Thank God I was Wrong. Solo album in ’07?

Part 2 and more coming…………really.

Oh yeah and check this classic vid I was re-introduced to a couple of days ago. Its the all-star freestyle from the last episode of Yo! MTV Raps. Its in two parts. Can you name them all?

New Years Eve Recap

The good:

 • Law & Order reruns out the wazoooooo.
 • Papoose getting shine on BET.
 • Seeing this:

The bad:

 • Being sick this whole week, and still being sick on New Year’s Eve.
 • Toni Braxton performance on FOX, where she sang ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’ *nh*, and horribly at that; even a backup vocal track couldn’t help. Was it really that hard to find anything that wasn’t a generic 7 year old single? She doesn’t even have a new project on the horizon to hawk, so why her?

Happy New Year 2007 to all 3 of our readers who ironically are the same 3 people who write on here. Expect good stuff.
