Jay-Z just christened a billion dollar plus arena with 8 consecutive sold out shows.. in Brooklyn, NY. Re-read that and let that marinate. At this point Jay-Z can pull a Wayne Newton and just perform there as his exclusive home, I’m not even sure Brooklyn Nets fan would mind. I’ve been slightly salty that I didn’t plan better on making it out there and witnessing this historic run. I debated the latter half of this week of just taking a train up to NYC and yolo-ing out. That saltiness was watered down greatly with news that Hov’s home on the internets, Life + Times will be live streaming the closing show of his run, tonight at 9:30pm. Consider your Saturday night agenda set.
If you are really about that streaming life, Virgin Free Fest is also streaming, with Santigold, Alabama Shakes, Nas (at 6:20pm), M83, Jack White & Skrillex (amongst others) at this very moment over here.
Three of my favorite songs of the year belong to Danny Brown: “Jay Dee’s Revenge”, “Blueberry (Pills & Cocaine)” and now “Molly Ringwald”. The arc is a jarring one: a staunch skull breaker turns into a drug fueled orgy, which then awakens as a zombified trap banger. Danny’s wail is the great equalizer, subsuming sounds from different continents under his cracked out performance. “Molly Ringwald” has the kind of energy that people use to justify listening to Waka Flocka and yet it’s named for the 80s teen star. It’s just over two minutes of blissful concussed rage and you can’t listen to this it picturing his gap tooth smile.
These are the best of Juicy J’s Blue Dream & Lean bonus tracks. I like the deliberate, hamfisted way he enunciates, “I’m like Bobby Brown, ho, without New Edition” on “Codine Cups.”
“Jay Dee’s Revenge” appears on one of two upcoming posthumous J Dilla releases. Rebirth of Detroit drops June 12 and features Detroit artists rapping over unreleased Dilla beats. Likewise, Dillatroit is another 12 unreleased Dilla beats and drops May 25. Get those floodgates all the way open!
Holy crap, when the first digital short epic known as Lazy Sunday dropped about 6 years ago(!!), I played it countless numbers of times for nearly all my friends. With out doubt, it was one of the first things made for TV with the real intention of going viral. Sidebar: Metallungies was still on *blogspot* when we mentioned it in passing (it was so big, that it didn’t need a post, everyone had already seen it, word to my HS teachers).
Well, with Andy Samberg doing his last SNL episode, he called up the homie Chris Parnell and did what can best be described as a very worthy followup/sequel. The 101st installment of SNL Digital Short, wraps up the era nicely.
Shouts to Knobbz for picking up the brilliant ‘Welcome to Atlanta’ reference.
I don’t like it when Big K.R.I.T. gets too ‘we can make it if we try’ with his starry-eyed message songs, but even in these cases, he always brings it back with a champion flow and a grandiose beat. Listen to a bonus cut about drugs below.
We had a chat at HQ and we decided there weren’t enough sex videos on ML. A quick search turned up this video for Slugabed’s new single off Time Team, out May 7. I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m assuming it’s steamy. For round two, listen to Daedelus’ remix.
