Hopefully he doesn’t miss too much of GTA IV, I hear it’s fantastic. In all seriousness, I don’t if I should laugh or cry, he’s trying to be “hard” but yet he still such a kid too.
The legendary Brooklyn producer Easy Mo Bee, whose production credits most notably include a series of classics with The Notorious B.I.G. and the rest of the old Bad Boy Records camp, gives a great interview where he touches on moments from his long and storied career and talks about rap music today.
A wise and humble master of his craft, Mo Bee always makes for a great interview. His deep, friendly voice is the kind that makes you want to curl up with the last of your matzah and listen to him tell stories for half an hour. And the giant gap in his teeth makes him all the more charming.
Some highlights:
Bought his first turntable and mixer off the $62.51 he made every week from working at a health food store
Got his start producing for Big Daddy Kane on It’s a Big Daddy Thing
Diddy was “like a slave driver”, calling him at two in the morning when working on Ready to Die
Went to NYC Tech for one year and quit after getting a job at Con Edison; to this day he wishes he had gotten at least an associate’s degree: “College never ever hurts”
Almost went to Kingsborough Community College to train to become a radio announcer
Made Flava In Ya Ear in his underwear
Says there’s less emphasis on the DJ today
Has a Razr
Misses being in the studio with artists as opposed to emailing tracks; interaction in the studio means better records
Greatest strength is in God, greatest weakness is women
Biggest achievement is working with Miles Davis
Current state of hip hop: “It’s OK”
Interview takes place in Unique Studios, where Biggie and Tupac recorded Runnin’ (From tha Police)together; ever since they died, it hasn’t been the same
Currently: “You could say I’m going the independent route”
You can hear Old Man Easy tell more stories in the Notorious B.I.G. Bigger Than Life documentary. He recently co-produced the best song by far on 8 Diagrams.
Never thought there would come a time when this site would be covering multiple cooking shows hosted by rappers. It’s been a while since the premiere, so let’s check in with Mr. Jazze Phizzle and see what he’s cooking.
Romance To Dance Chicken (with fruit roll-ups & peach rings):
Bologna Omelet:
Jazze’s got a frickin’ DJ on his cooking show! For my money, Coolio’s show is funnier and focuses more on actual cooking. But I’m still definitely checking this just to see what kind of dishes Phalon will come up with.
Is this rapper cooking show coverage excessive, ML readers?
Late pass please, I remember reading about it around the time it came out in 2006 but I’ve never actually seen it till now. If you haven’t seen this it is pretty funny, the casting is great, think hip-hop meets Spinal Tap. Stars Snoop Dogg as Head, David Banner as David, Lil John as Jonathon Davis, and Xzibit as Fieldy. I miss rocking out to Korn in Middle school.
“Born 2 Live” was the debut single of rapper Omar Creadle, best known by his initials. It was the first single for Word…Life, his 1994 debut released on the unstable Wild Pitch Records.
So we just came across this amazing battle rap via Just Blaze, which we need a late pass for. Anyway, it is so amazing we felt obligated to drop our random musings for you.
Dope intro font with a sick gradient, on that Sweden colorway!
Why does Marv-O only get the old english font treatment?
What the hell are those random dots behind him you ask?? A CITY MURAL DUH!
White text over a white tee=high readability.
Sucking up to the host with lines “I’m so nice I could be Marv-o’s brother” is pointless, Marv-o doesn’t vote! Unless Envy has other intentions for such flattering words.
If anything, J-Dub would be a up for a brown-nosing bar like that.
Envy might the first rapper that follows up a rap about pumps with a bright smile.
You must pause the video at 2:03 to see the focus on J-Dubs face, he def. deserves all the chest rubs from Marv-o. The man is overly focused.
The production is truly fly from picture in picture joint in the corner to a straight up heart cut out of Eli. Right in the middle of which the graphic pops up to reminded that the fellow we are watching is named Eli.
Pause at 3:41 with Marv-O & J-Dub in the heart, clearly the video crew is throwing subliminals.
Why is Johnathon the Godfather?
A14, of course, is it possible to do both Good and Great?
I think I’m going to drop out of school and watch this clip all day, thanks Just Blaze.
Who do we think should’ve won? Neither, they both got more than 45 seconds thus being disqualified.
