Finally… (And other stuff).

I waited for so long. Every time I checked there was another delay.  But finally, the Stones Throw digital store is open. The cover above is for the single piece of Vinyl that I needed to have so badly. The only song I wanted was the instrumental for Styles, Crews, Flows, Beats. And now I have it.

Judging by the stuff they have released I will probably be broke by the end of the month.

Plus in his last post DJ01 gave a lot of good Clipse tidbits, but didn’t mention that the dude who owned the dog that Malice escaped from told us that he was in 7-11 some years ago, and met Cappadonna. Cappadonna in those days had quit rapping and wasn’t doing very well financially, and dude apparently was trying to sell “big bags of weed” to the guy who owned the dog. Hilarious.

Beat Drop: The Neptunes.

The “Neptunes sound” is candy sweet. Allow me to explain (so that I don’t have to say “no homo”)…

Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, despite their initial successes as hitmakers for the likes of Noreaga and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, are responsible for some of the most “bubble gum” music of the past few years. Britney Spears, Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Kelis, Usher, Gwen Stefani — the ‘Tunes’ signature spaced-out drums, synths and keys, coupled with Pharrell’s crackly crooning, are all too familiar to 13-year-old white girls and “To Catch A Predator” detainees alike.

Yet, the “Neptunes sound” is also all too synonymous with another type of candy — the one that makes you dandy. Nose candy. Booger sugar. That white that, when cooked over a flame with water and baking soda, creates a rock-like substance that has contributed to such racial disparity in America’s prison system that Lil’ Wayne felt it necessary to dedicate about 5 minutes of Tha Carter III to discussing it. But I digest digress…

For all of their pop music and Kids’ Choice Award successes, they have continued to work with and develop artists like The Clipse, FamLay, and Rosco P. Coldchain, despite the label politic drama that seems to consistently rear its ugly head and shelve their albums. In fact, I’ve read at a couple of sites — and if random Internet blogs are no longer credible sources of information, I don’t want to live in this crazy world — that the Neptunes refused to sign off on their contributions to Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds album if Jive Records did not release Hell Hath No Fury (which would have been the second shelved Clipse LP). The end result was an insanely-successful Timberlake album with no input from the ‘Tunes, and a horribly-promoted album release from The Clipse’s former label.

Most would probably kick themselves when considering the amount of money lost by refusing to work with Timberlake, one of the biggest record sellers of our generation, at the expense of convincing a major record label that hasn’t cared about rap music for years to toss a “hit single”-less LP to the public, essentially as a tax write-off. But, I don’t think that the Neptunes regret this costly decision. Why?

Because Pharrell and Chad could have gone the easy route, ditched the flailing genre that is hip hop music, and stuck to making pop records, but they haven’t… at least, not yet. (Pharrell, Chad — if y’all are reading this, don’t let me give y’all any ideas). That’s why I respect ’em, and why I was willing to break away from paying homage to the oft-praised “boom bap” producer — your Primo’s, Pete Rock’s, Large Pro’s and what have you — and tip my trucker cap* to the guys that “lace the beat like one of the best”. The Neptunes spent years crafting their unique sound, dating back to the days when they were carrying Teddy Riley’s bags and ghost-producing “Rump Shaker”, and deserve the right to share it with fans of all musical artists — even shitty ones.

Clipse live at Artscape – Baltimore, MD performing Hot Damn:

*Malice jumped on a hood of a car, wearing new ATC IIs none the less, when it looked like a huge pitbull might be on the loose, in verbatim “Oh hell nah, that’s a pit!”

*Pusha T likes to snack on Cheetos & a bottle of Mistic Tea. “Fucking loves” Chevy Chase, MD and wants to live there.

*Clipse nodded in approval of the ML logo.

Rocket scientists.. guess who’s going to be featured on the Neptunes Beat Drop this week? [Well, kinda sorta… check the Beat Drop for clarification. – Buhizzle]

Big shouts to Dan over at Koch and Geezy.

Dilla Ghost Doom – Sniperlite

A new Stones Throw  12″ has Ghostface and MF Doom going in on a pair of J Dilla beats. Stones Throw has the back story:

In late 2005 Ghostface Killa and MF DOOM were both recording over tracks from J Dilla’s instrumental opus, Donuts, which saw release the following February. Some of these were released on Ghostface’s Fishscale in 2006, while others, including a Dilla-Doom project, were postponed indefinitely after J Dilla’s passing. Two of these tracks, “Sniper Elite” and “Murder Goons,” are presented here for the first time. The two are taken from two sequential songs off Donuts, meant to mix together. We are presenting the two songs unmixed, plus the two mixed together as a bonus track.

“Murder Goons” was actually already on J-Love’s Hidden Darts 4 mixtape, but the Doom track is new (to me) and dope. I just wish it were longer.

And doesn’t Dilla Ghost Doom sound like it would be the greatest thing ever? Where’s Swift & Changeable anyway?

Public Enemy at Pitchfork Music Festival.

Apparently they absolutely killed it.  Not only did they roll out all of A Nation of Millions, but they went on to perform most of their hits including my personal favorite “911 is a joke.”  The footage is rough, but very enjoyable.

KiD CuDi – a KiD named CuDi.

Cleveland native KiD CuDi dropped his mixtape today and after one listen I’m sold. CuDi is one of those guys with such a weird, new sound that you want to tell everybody about him. He starts off sounding a little Wale-ish, but quickly distinguishes himself with some really trippy joints. The production is as fresh as it gets; I dig the techno sound on “Embrace the Martian” and “Save My Soul” has a blues-like twang that makes it sound like a protest song. I could go on and on; each track is all kinds of crazy.

The singing on “The Prayer” sounded like a misstep, but it morphs into “Day N Nite” in a cool way and I got used to the singing by “Pillow Talk”. We just might have a replacement for Nate Dogg if he gets locked up for his shenanigans.

And for my homies in Hawaii (I actually do know a few people in Hawaii), “Maui Wowie” is now your official anthem.

Curren$y – Super Tecmo Bowl

I just got around to listening to the latest from New Orleans’ Curren$y, Super Tecmo Bowl. His beat selection is on point as always and he stays dropping nice punch-lines. Better than the his last, which I thought was a little weak.

Dude’s got good timing too. The folks at Tecmo are reviving the series with Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff next year on DS and Wii. How about some cross-promotion?
