Damn, technology blows my mind sometimes. Yesterday on the ML Twitter, I noticed Soulbrotha express interest in working with another friend of the site, the producer Aeon. I replied to it, telling Aeon to make it happen. Today I woke up to find a new Soulbrotha track in the inbox, produced by Aeon. Readers may recognize the beat from Aeon’s beat tape I posted a few months back. Stones Throw fans may recognize the same sample used for Koushik‘s “Be With”. Love the way Aeon flipped it.
I’ve been bumping this tape quite a bit recently. Fashawn is pretty nice on the mic and the beat selection is choice, including some joints produced by Exile. My one criticism is that Fashawn doesn’t have much of an identity as an emcee yet, but he’s getting there.
Browsing through the Crate Kings archives, I came across this mini documentary about the Fat Beats location in New York, hosted by the legendary (and Beat Drop Contributing) DJ Eclipse. Pretty interesting. They also did a slightly more generic documentary on the store while back that’s worth checking out too.
“Father Time” is a 1995 single by Canadian rapper Saukrates, released as a 12′ shared with Choclair’s “21 Years.” It’s considered something of a underground classic, getting spin on the Stretch and Bobbito show back in the day and chosen for the first Fat Beats Compilation.
Off the best mixtape of 2008 that you haven’t heard yet, Bring Me The Head of Zilla Rocca. Many styles, many styles. You may know Zilla from our last 3BeatDrops, but the man is better known for writing rhymes than blog posts (though he does that too.)
New Souls of Mischief! Sweet. 93 Til Infinity is a great album that doesn’t get enough props, but I’d be lying if I said I was familiar with much of the Souls’ work after that album. There’s been rumors floating around for a while about a new Souls album produced entirely by Prince Paul. In February, I posted a video of A-Plus claiming the album was done. Nothing’s leaked yet; this doesn’t sound like a Prince Paul beat, anyway, but it’s still pretty damn nice.
Street Fighter II has been remastered into HD for a release on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. To commemorate the occasion, they put together the Street Fighter Underground Remix mixtape, with all the instrumentals sampled from the game (even the sound effects and the announcers!) East of LA has several more tracks from the soundtrack for download, including tracks by Hieroglyphics and Zion I. Quality shit.
Dope Lessondary/Tanya Morgan producer and friend of the site Aeon just sent over a nice little beat tape of joints he produced between 2005-2006. Highly recommended.
Aeon is also working on an instrumental full length called The Perpetual Contenders, that I’ve been looking forward to for a minute. Stay tuned to Aeon’s blog for news on that as it develops.
One of my favourite tracks this year, off one of the best albums to drop this year. Ali’s verse is incredible. Directed by Rik Cordero.
Oh, by the way: Jake has a blog too. He’s got some interesting stories about making the record, all good stuff. I’ll have to add him to the master list of producers with blogs.
Von Pea from Tanya Morgan does original, dope tracks over Madlib’s beats from the 2nd Quasimoto album, The Further Adventures of Lord Quas. You need this in your life. Hey, and it’s Von’s birthday today so go wish the man.
Did I mention how much I love that album cover?
Check out our interview with Tanya Morgan if you haven’t already! Oh, one more thing: Grand Vonye is a classic. You need to listen to that. “Progress Report” is my jam.
