Late pass on this mixtape from producer Mars, with appearances from The Game, Phonte and Marsha Ambrosius. Mars is part of the production group 1500 or Nothin’ who produced “Dope Boys” and “Touch Down” on L.A.X. Life on Mars is futuristic and sometimes excessively pop, but still very soulful. Can’t wait for volume 2.

Take it, you animals. Just take it. It’s everything Wale promised it would be.

Donwill offers some back story:
Around the time we were working on moonlighting me and brickbeats used to just meet up and record random shit. I always had this idea to pay homage to some of my favorite songs and use some of those interlude beats that my favorite albums always had on em. The result was the Vainglorious Remake LP. On it you will find me reenvisioning PE, Ghetto Boyz, NWA, EPMD, ATCQ and a few others and of course the Lessondary crew is in attendance. It’s ‘out of print’ by the standards of the digital age but thanks to the homie its been ‘reissued’ aka he found it and uploaded it to zshare. Apparently he has included a few extra songs to boot!
Long story short: dope beats and rhymes. What more could you ask for? What up, Donwill!

Let’s give hip-hop pioneer Paul C (learn something) the same posthumous respect and admiration that we give Dilla (minus the erroneous production credits). Hosted by Prince Po, Paul C. Lives, Vol. 2 is a compilation of mostly non-album cuts produced by the late great Paul C. Let’s make ‘Paul C to the Organisms’ the new ‘J Dilla Changed My Life’.
Get volume 1 here.

M-Dot is a Boston-based emcee who I’ve checking for a minute, and I was recently hit with the link to his latest mixtape, M.oney D.oesn’t O.wn T.hought. The mixtape boasts appearances from Termanology, Singapore Kane and Nabo Rawk and production by Domingo and DC the Midi Alien. This is boom-bap comfort food, with good rapping and quality beats. Also I think he may be competing with One Be Lo for the “most convoluted acronym-based album title”, also known as the M.C.A.B.A.T. award.
Here’s the video for the song “Gotta Be” off M.usically D.riven O.ver T.ime, featuring Krumb Snatcha. Very dope.
M-Dot’s debut M.usically D.riven O.ver T.ime drops later this year, and will feature guest spots from Masta Ace, Sha Stimuli, Akrobatik, Krumb Snatcha, Edo.G and Big Shug.

Southern California emcee Anterluz emailed me a while back, and I never got around to posting his stuff. Let me make up for it now, and get you acquainted with two recent tracks.
“I Ain’t Know” has a classic West Coast sound to it, with woozy synthesizers, rolling bass and what sounds like the drums from “More Bounce”. Ant rips the ominous, psychedelic beat on “We Get It Done” with a steady, forceful flow. “We Get It Done” sounds like it could be an Alchemist production, and I mean that in the best possible way. This kid’s got a lot of promise and great production behind him, I advise to you to get familiar. Ant’s album Fight For The Crown drops this summer.

The good folks at Three/21 Media (Rik Cordero and them) just put out a new mixtape of classic Beastie Boys tracks. A lot of the material on here is not their most popular work so don’t go looking for “Fight for Your Right” or “Sabotage” cause you won’t find it.
If you’re at work or for some reason you can’t download, I’ve included the embedded player after the jump.

Just when I had all but lost interest in Joell Ortiz, he drops this amazing mixtape and reestablishes himself as one of the most talented rappers around. Covers The Classics has Joell rhyming insane over hip-hop standards like “Rappers Delight,” “Verbal Intercourse” and “Ebonics.” Joell stays true to the mixtape format with tracks rarely exceeding 2 minutes. Everything from the cover art to the DJ drops on this tape is well placed. No one is allowed to rhyme over these beats for the next five years.

You know we stay on that videogame rap. This is a genius mixtape which blends hip hop a capellas with beats sampled from the soundtrack of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. The beats are by the excellently named Team Teamwork. Some of my favourite remixes are Edan’s “Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme”, the Clipse’s “Virginia”, and Aesop Rock’s “No Jumpercables”. Granted, a few of the remixes don’t really work, but it’s still worth your time.
Vaguely related: awesome commercial for The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time.
