Eternia – Get Caught Up, Mixtape.

You wouldn’t think it by looking at her, but Eternia has more in common with Torae and Blaq Poet than Lauryn Hill. She’s not as violent or profane as her fellow boom bappers, but every bit as abrasive and perhaps a better lyricist.

Get Caught Up rounds up tracks Eternia has recorded since 2000. The result is anything but cohesive, but a great introduction to a talented MC.

Eternia’s upcoming album with producer MoSS can only be good. Entitled At Last, the project drops next year.

Don’t sleep on her track with J.J. Brown either.

Chip Tha Ripper – The Cleveland Show, Mixtape.

It’s been awhile since I’ve heard a mixtape that I can listen to from beginning to end. Chip Tha Ripper’s The Cleveland Show is cohesive and entertaining from beginning to end, though it runs a little long (27 tracks). It’s all slow stoner jams like “Fat Raps.”

G-Side – Who’s Hood (ft.Yelawolf).

A dope flip of Ahmad Jamal’s “I Love Music” (Nas – “The World Is Yours”, Jeru Tha Damaja – “Me Or The Papes”, etc) complements nice verses from ST 2 Lettaz and Young Clova and fellow Alabaman Yelawolf. That last verse is nasty.

Pockets went from itty bitty/to Diddy and Biggie

DJ Jazzy Jeff – He’s The King, I’m The DJ, Mixtape.

Whenever a major artist dies, there’s an initial media blitz where you have a ton of people talking about everything except the music. You know, those people who watch cable news for 3 hours a day. Eventually, those people find something else to talk about, usually a sex scandal or someone winning American Idol.

But even after the story’s buzz dies out, the music-lovers continue to carry the torch. Even though Michael Jackson isn’t front page news anymore, artists continue to pay tribute.

With He’s The King, I’m The DJ, DJ Jazzy Jeff runs through Jackson’s greatest moments and also throws in some rare remixes. Yes, Michael Jackson is synonymous with controversy, but take an hour to remember why his death shook the planet. He made timeless music.

Transmitting Live Volume One (Mixed by DJ Traumatix).

Today, the definition of the word mixtape is more nebulous than ever. Let’s be clear. This is a mixtape. It’s mixed, it features unknowns and somewhat-knowns, and it doesn’t hurt that all 29 tracks are new.

A mix of tracks that have been out for months, emailed out by your label the week before your album comes out is not a mixtape.

Transmitting Live is a great collection of obscure underground shit.

B.o.B. – Yesterday, Video.

B.o.B. aka Bobby Ray plays a lovely acoustic version of “Yesterday” off his upcoming (fingers crossed) debut, The Adventures of B.O.B. I’m not crazy about a lot of the Bobby Ray stuff on the B.o.B. Vs. Bobby Ray mixtape, but I like this song a lot.

As a bonus, check out this great compilation of untagged B.o.B. joints that Shake at 2dopeboyz put together. Hopefully some of these will show up on his debut!
