[adult swim] Loves You.

This is a beautiful thing. Not only does [adult swim] drop album-after-album of classic hip-hop. Now they are giving away another album for free?! This is another one of those Stones Throw compilation joints. Its called Chrome Children 2. It has some remixes and a fair amount of new shit. Pretty Hot. The price is right too. Cop it free here.

And if you haven’t bought that first Chrome Children, do that.

I got a story wanna hear it? Here it go…

TokenBy way of introduction…..

A few weeks ago I began to get this odd feeling in the bottom of my gut. I would wake up in the morning with my breath smelling like ether. Not the same substance which Nas used to burn his greatest rival. But a fume that came from the poison welling up in my stomach. The idea for a cure came to me in a dream: “Start a BLOG”, the dream said. So I made this:

http://newyorkrap.blogspot.com/

It’s a BLOG about New York, Hip-Hop, and our decaying American Empire.
I showed it around the Internets. Your boy DJ Lethal (The man who runs this site, not the DJ from House of Pain) must have liked it because he asked me to join the team at METAL LUNGIES.

I told him like this: I’d be honored.

So to begin:

Face facts: Hip Hop is dead. And I don’t want to hear anyone saying it’s still alive like ya’ll ain’t in agreement with Nas (He said It’s dead motherfucker!)

1. I intend to celebrate it’s memory with every word I utter (type).

2. Just because the shit is dead doesn’t mean there isn’t still good music being made. I’m gonna find it and celebrate that too.

3. I come from a hip hop tradition and that informs everything I do and have done in my adult life. But all music comes from the same place (and will one day return there when it dies) and I reserve the right to post any kind of music I wish.

4. I’d like to say peace to all the lovely people out there and say thanks to my new compadres at Metal Lungies.

Now, I’d like to jump it off with a joint from Nas, who was with Hip Hop during her final moments and came out the room to break the sad news to the rest of us (we were all pacing the hallways). The reason why Nas is the best rapper alive is because he can swagger and boast with the best of them but he can also be introspective and self-critical (something most rappers refuse to do). In this song, from some ancient mixtape I had in my closet, Nas describes how he went from Illmatic to “ehh” and back. It is one of the most honest hip hop songs I’ve ever heard.

“Read a book on Pablo Escobar and got on some shit”

This is a real lo-fi MP3 and usually I try to strictly post songs with high bit-rates. But this song was too fitting and it’s worth a listen:

Nas: The Rise And Fall

Until next time Kiddies
My Name is Blind Boy Grunt.
an’ I’m out.
Peace!

Redman’s New Album Cover.

This is defiantly only something Redman would do. Im getting a hip-hop south park on crack vibe. I would love to know the creative process behind this. Regardless the long overdue Red Gone Wild album is something to look forward to as Red has one of the most underrated catalogues in rap. (Art Credit: Fader)

ps look out for some new blood at ML!

Wow.. R.I.P. Disco D.

I just heard about this today, but back on Tuesday Disco D was found dead from an apparent suicide. If you haven’t heard of Disco D, you probably have heard his work as his biggest was Ski Mask Way from 50 Cent‘s The Massacre. He was building up his name in the production scene while also being a DJ at the same time, which was evident through out his music which always included a very club friendly DJ flavor. At age 27, who knows what kind of hits were ahead of him, very sad.

The White Rapper Show + Tyrese Update.

I was about to turn off the TV last night when something caught my eye. It was the last few minutes of egotrip’s White Rapper Show. I decided to check out the show just because egotrip was handling the show. A little background info, Egotrip is a now-defunct magazine/set of books/TV show maker for VH1. I own all their books (Big Book of Racism & The Book of Rap Lists), I’ve seen all their previous VH1 show specials like race-o-rama, and they made some of the best hip-hop television I’ve have ever watched. If you’ve ever read any of their written product (that written product is what’s hot yo!) you can see the seamless transition from the minds that brought you the magazines/books working to transport their genius to the TV medium. Anyway, back to show, its hosted by MC Serch of 3rd Bass, who is a heavily slept on icon in hip hop (I would consider him as a link to the bridge between Beastie’s and Eminem). Serch really shines on the show, by not putting on some sugar-coated survivor TV reality host shit act. You get to see who the true Serch is, the one you’d be staring down in your A&R meeting. I kind of wish they will incorporate some white rappers outside of Serch into the show to the contestant how it is done. I’m not necessarily talking about Eminem, people like Bubba Sparxxx, Lil Wyte, or even ML favorite Hot Karl would suffice. From what I saw at the end, egotrip’s humorous touches are incorporated into the show, their dedication to hip-hop history isn’t either. I didn’t get to see much of the episode, I hope to catch the rerun, but it looks like the people involved are true hip-hop heads. They have to be, by getting people from Grandmaster Flash to Prince Paul to be a part of the show. As for the contestants they don’t seem too bad, defiantly not some rapping American Idol rejects, I look forward to see how they develop. It airs Monday nights, check out the VH1 site for the show. Maybe I should liveblog/episode recap for this series or something.

As for Tyrese thing I mentioned last week, apparently the whole incident was “distorted”, riiiight.

p.s. I did see the Snoop movie, a post should come soon.

PSA: SET YOUR TIVOS TO BET ON SATURDAY AT 11pm!

On Saturday night, if you can’t catch it, set your VCR, tivos, camcorders to record Snoop Dogg in Boss’n Up. While there isn’t too much info regarding this movie, just the part of it being a musical with Snoop Dogg has me immediately sold.

IMDB (It is right around Killa Season [Our Review] territory with a 3.0 rating, as where Killa Season has a 3.4)

Come back maybe Sunday..or next month.. because we sorta procrastinate around here for Oprah’s Book Club-level type of discussion, bring your reading glasses!

Some quick notes:

Free Busta shirts going to print very soon? Anyone else amused hearing the news refer to him as “Mr. Rhymes” when mentioning the incident?

Tyrese puts his own spin on getting publicity for an album, a rap album at that, but no guns involved, just to-be-baby-mamas being assaulted. Classy. I’m just hoping it was just a stunt, and not some reenactment of his character from ‘Baby Boy’ in real life.

Some interview quotables courtesy of Lil Wayne & T.I.

So I was flipping through the latest blender issue, which is my favorite all around music magazine. Anyway I came across too very noteworthy interviews one from Lil Wayne and one from T.I.

In his interview, for which he was probably in the same state he was in when he did the complex interview, he rambles on a whole bunch of topics. My highlights are:

  • Asking about an apocalypse is gay.
  • Bitches are the biggest waste of time but at least the Minnesota ones provide the best sex.
  • Wayne knew a long time ago Lance Bass was ghey…hmm…
  • Wayne is pro-myspace, friend him now! while you are at it friend us too!

read the rest here (I fired up the scanner for you people dammit!):

As for T.I., he didn’t say anything out of the ordinary other than, his favorite song of the year James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful”, I really pray he was being sarcastic. He also seems to be aware of the current events, like google is making that cake and the US doesn’t need any more wars.

read more here:

Which one do you prefer? By default I’m gonna go with Wayne, I just can’t get over the whole James Blunt thing.

New Years Eve Recap

The good:

  • Law & Order reruns out the wazoooooo.
  • Papoose getting shine on BET.
  • Seeing this:

The bad:

  • Being sick this whole week, and still being sick on New Year’s Eve.
  • Toni Braxton performance on FOX, where she sang ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’ *nh*, and horribly at that; even a backup vocal track couldn’t help. Was it really that hard to find anything that wasn’t a generic 7 year old single? She doesn’t even have a new project on the horizon to hawk, so why her?

Happy New Year 2007 to all 3 of our readers who ironically are the same 3 people who write on here. Expect good stuff.
