Hip Hop + Art: The Roots

Two weeks ago on this day, I was in Toronto watching the best live act on earth in concert. The Roots, who I haven’t seen in about 2 years blew everyone’s mind. There wasn’t a second that wasted from all the James Brown covers to ?uestlove dancing. I didn’t bother to bring in a camera because no photo taken with my shaky/tired hands would do justice and looking at my camera phone pictures you can’t even tell that I was at the concert. This made me think of them as the perfect candidate for: Hip Hop + Art entry.

A drawing of ?uestlove & Black Thought:

Some cool Photomanipulation of ?uestlove:

A very dope Roots wallpaper (good hip-hop related wallpapers like this are hard to come by):

A very Artistic drawing of ?uestlove:

Another interesting photomanipulation with ?uestlove The Roots:

The following two I couldn’t embed into the post but defiantly deserved a mention.

Bonus: check out the jam band-esque stash of live recordings at The Roots Live.

EDIT: I somehow skipped over these:

A very detailed Black Thought Vector:

And another more colorful one:

A good Snoop + Diddy read.

I came across this article from the UK which does a really good job of giving you a glimpse into what a Snoop/Diddy European tour is like.

My favorite part:

Suddenly, at 1am, Diddy strides into our anteroom and sinks into the sofa. He has MTV duties to attend to, where he must find imaginative answers to questions about why he’s the greatest. Snoop turns up halfway through – his tall, bony frame casting shadows in the downlight; his eyes showing some trademark redness – and there is much touching of fists. Snoop says “yabba dabba doo” an awful lot, which means he’s happy. And then it’s The Independent’s turn. So, I ask, are Diddy and Snoop good role models for kids?

Bonus Article: on the man who organized the tour: Chris Lighty.

G-Unit Sh-sh-shakeups?

50 Cent was just on Hot97 a day or two back, sounding real mature and business like I gotta admit. He covered the allegations of Tony Yayo beating up Jimmy Henchman’s kid. It sounds like the man is trying to take G-Unit in a new different direction. ML’s favorite Young Buck might not be a part of the plans, although it wasn’t clear, likening Buck to The Game, doesn’t signal a bright future for him as a G-Unit soldier. I wouldn’t be too worried for Buck I think he can pull his own weight.

Oh and 50 confirmed G-unit said peace to:

Olivia, which is as surprising as needles at a heroin addicts house. She notches herself a second straight shelved (3 S’s!!) major label release, congrats!

Pharoahe Monch remixes Amy Winehouse.

One of the prime examples of a star-talent who hasn’t been able to shine nearly as he deserves due to label issues, Pharoahe Monch remixes the Amy Winehouse track ‘Rehab’.  If you know good music like Winehouse (who I should def. give some coverage soon), this looks like a can’t lose callabo on paper, and the sound lives up to that. The new date for the Pharoahe’s album ‘Desire’ is June 25th. The man is also on tour and from past experiences he has a well rehearsed and energetic show. The dates are:

Ex-Rocafella singer Rell is on his way to becoming R&B’s Nate Newton.

What did Nate Newton due once his football career with the cowboys wrapped up? He started transporting that green getting caught twice with 213 pounds and then with 175. Now comes Rell, the former Rocafella singer, who hasn’t been really heard from on the music scene in a moment, by getting arrested with an impressive 50 pounds (for the R&B division of weed stashes). I hope he can shoot for 80 pounds for his next arrest by those pesky boys in blue.. or black if you’re “major”.

25 Worst Rap Names.

Cracked has put together a list of the 25 worst rap names. The name at #1, I don’t know if it is the worst rap name but it has to be one of the most hilarious ones. As for the rest of the list it’s entertaining but I don’t see how ‘The Lox’ is a bad name.
