Mashups for A Friday

Shabbat shalom, ML readers! I’ma leave you for the weekend with two of my favourite mashups of recent memory. The rest of the Lungies team are a bit busy right now, so I’ll be doing most of the posting for a bit.

The first is from the amazing mashup/culturejam team, Evolution Control Committee. Off their Herb Alpert/Public Enemy mashup album, The Whipped Cream Mixes. This is song is a mashup of PE’s "Rebel Without A Pause" and and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass song (anyone know which one?) I’m not going to post the whole album, but you can find it online somewhere. This was actually one of the first mashup albums, pre-Grey Album. What? Yes, they did exist before a capella albums were released officially.

This version of the song is absolutely brilliant.

Rebel Without A Pause (Whipped Cream Mix)

Here’s a sweet promo video made for the song too.

The second mashup is the Al Green/Nas mashup album, Almatic (props to the awesome Dumpin.net for pointing this out to me). This would be one of the best mashup albums in recent memory but for three things:

1) Most of the acapellas are clean versions.

2) It has a bunch of DJ drops.

3) One of the songs chosen is Oochie Wally. There are some things you can’t fix, my friends.

But it’s still very dope. Y’all know I’m an Al Green fan and the beats they sample from his stuff are consistently great. Here’s my favourite mashup of the album, the remix of "Made You Look" mixed with Al’s "Love & Happiness". It’s also one of the few songs that isn’t censored.

Made You Look/Love & Happiness (ft.Jadakiss & Ludacris)

Cop the whole album here, courtesy of the good folks at Swindle Entertainment. You can download the songs individually too, which is nice.

Have a good weekend!

"WTF?" Rapper Guest Appearances: LFO & M.O.P.?!

One of the most head scratching collaborations I’ve ever heard in my life. In what universe do LFO (aka Lyte Funky Ones) and M.O.P. (aka Mash Out Posse) share an audience? I guess they both go by acronyms…Anyway, Brownsville’s finest appear on an light ditty about appreciating life called "Life Is Good" (man, even the title seems to go against anything M.O.P. have said in their songs!)

Danz & Fame, who scored their biggest hit with a song about robbing people, jump in for a few surprisingly conscious bars that certainly aren’t embarrassing per se. But they don’t really fit the song at all and just sound hilariously out of place over LFO’s poppy boy-band-isms.

I should mention this is the album version and it’s been remixed by, um, adding a few scratches to make it more "rap-y". I dunno if they were hoping to capture the Timberland boots crowd with this remix but it stands as a testament to bizarre niche marketing. I should add that De La Soul also appear on a track on this album, but I’ve never heard it.

Here’s are the lyrics for M.O.P.’s verses (apologies if I mixed up Billy & Fame, I do that sometimes)

Billy Danzenie:

My mission is to save this world,
Cause it’s a never ending task
I don’t know where to begin,
And I feel I’m near the end
I don’t wanna live life doin’ petty nonsense
It’s hard to sleep at night with a guilty conscience
You know what’s really a mess, now I feel blessed
But twenty minutes from now, will it all turn to stress?
I’m twenty-seven years old and Brownsville raised
Upset with all the blood, the sweat, and the tears
Lil’ Fame:

Baby it’s on, a mother shed tears, at the same time, a baby is born
On the other side of town, a life is lost
A young thug was knocked off, and the heat was tossed
Damn, life is real, and so tragic
But don’t stop now, live your life, I know it’s hell for the rough,
But don’t talk down on ya man, unless you helpin’ him out
ITS YOURS!

For kicks, go read the rest of the lyrics. They are hilariously stupid.

For those interested, don’t say I didn’t warn you:

Best Of 2007: This Is The BIG One!

Chances are, what you’re about to read is the latest 2007 wrap-up amongst the hip hop blogosphere. And I don’t mean “latest” as in the “newest”. I mean “latest” as in everybody has done this before we did, and as a result, we’re late. Like how you wouldn’t want your girl’s period to be.

To that, we say this — how could you truly wrap up 2007 when 2007 is still going on?

Here’s how we’re wrapping up 2007 ML-style, in this, the first of several “Best of 2007” posts. First, each of us here at ML — DJ01, HangoverMonkey, DSuper, Aaron M, and yours truly, Buhizzle — compiled our own personal list of the top 10 albums of the year. Then, on some quasi-NCAA-poll-type shit, we compared lists and compiled a (somewhat) comprehensive top 10 list based on all of our picks. Here at ML, we pride ourselves on having 5 different contributors with 5 different personalities and unique tastes in music generally, and in hip hop specifically — after the jump, peep how our personalities and tastes overlap.

"WTF?" Rapper Guest Appearances : Slim Thug & Hilary Duff?!.

It’s been awhile since the first instalment with KRS-One and Crazy Town but seeing this song on a blog was what inspired me to start this feature.

This time around, Slim Thug is paired with former Disney teenybopper Hilary Duff for a remix of her song, "With Love".

I can’t vouch for what the original sounds like (honest!) but the remix puts Slim over a synthy beat with hard drums. His verse isn’t AWFUL or anything; it’s just very generic.

But what really detracts from the quality here is that he’s rapping on a FUCKING HILARY DUFF song. I ain’t heard of that!

Anyway, here’s a video of the song with the remix dubbed over. Prepare to be weirded out.

Esmée Denters, I Love You.

This YouTube phenom recently signed with JT’s label Tennman Records after a year of posting videos online, covering the likes of Beyoncé, Ne-Yo and throwing in her own improvisions. Looking at some of the old posts from nearly a year ago, it’s simply amazing how this Dutch beauty’s voice carries through even on a crappy webcam.

Look for big things from this girl.

Jacob the Jeweler ices out the VMA’s.

So that’s what $200,000 (or talent recognized by MTV) can buy you from Jacob the Jeweler (you can’t keep him down, he is also debuting his own Vodka, no word if it’s liquid platinum). This is the ‘moon man’ award for this years VMAs. We might be lining up to trade in our home for one. You might’ve forgotten while drooling over that Rihanna pic that the VMA’s are this Sunday at 9pm from Las Vegas. Sadly, we won’t be in vegas nor will we be watching live (there go our chances of spotting any Janet super bowl-esque moments, which Britney may be ripe for), instead we’ll be curiously watching the joint on tivo (WWKD=What Will Kanye Do?), as to why this is, stay tuned….

Metallungies X Tien Mao, Helio Pool Party 8.19.07.

Our collabo project continues haters! The finale of the Helio Pool Party series went out with a bang. I wish I could’ve checked out the Baltimore Bass Connection!

Here’s what Tien thought:

Sunday’s McCarren Park Pool Party was the last one for 2007, and possibly the last one ever. With future use of the pool in question (http://gothamist.com/2007/08/15/mccarren_2.php), music fans and artists made the best out of the final show this year under overcast skies and rain. Yacht was a one man show with the artist stopping at one point to field audience Q&A and getting into the crowd to sing and dance. Following Yacht was a group of artists performing with The Baltimore Bass Connection with guests The Cool Kids, Kid Sister, Betty Black, and Pase Rock. The collective was followed (after a dancing banana) by the headliner Ghostland Observatory. While turnout was much smaller than it would have been on a nice day, the crowd was excited for the duo from Austin, Texas. Watching singer/guitarist Aaron Behrens, it’s clear why they say he’s drawn comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Prince.

Spank Rock (B-more legend.)

Santo Gold

Kid Sister (Signed to A-Trak’s & Catchdubs’ Fools Gold Label, appeared on that little mixtape. peep her.)

Cool Kids (Dope up & comers)
