Archive for Something to View

I judge wisely, as if nothing ever surprised me.

With the Wu gracing the cover of their upcoming issue, URB has taken upon themselves the daunting task of picking the Clan’s 20 greatest videos of all-time. Plenty of classic vids from the Clan as a whole — “C.R.E.A.M.”, “Triumph”, “Protect Ya Neck” — and from solo LPs as well — ODB’s “Got Your Money”, Meth’s “Bring The Pain”.

I can’t argue much with this list — the only dispute I have is why it couldn’t have been expanded to at least 25. If it could’ve been, here’s the 5 I would’ve added, in no particular order (though I probably would move “Gravel Pit” down a few notches to make room for these):

GZA/Genius – “Shadowboxin'” featuring Method Man / “4th Chamber” featuring Ghostface, Killah Priest & RZA

Always dug the whole military/warfare vibe of this video. Plus, it’s only so often that you get a Killah Priest sighting.

Mr. 3000.

New shit from Andre 3000, though not from “rapping Andre” as you probably would’ve hoped for. Instead, it’s the first single from Class of 3000: Music Volume One, the soundtrack to Dre’s popular animated feature on Cartoon Network, which hits stores on July 3rd — just in time for the show’s second season, which will air Thursdays (starting tomorrow) at 7:oo p.m. (PT/ET).

Musically, “Class of 3000 Theme Song” is interesting, as it’s split into 2 parts — the first more funk-influenced, the second more jazzy, lounge-type music. Lyrically, though… it’s Dre mostly talking, and a bunch of kids exchanging nursery rhymes. No way to sugarcoat it. But Dre does mention that you’re “cool” if you listen to it, so, you know… you’ll have that going for you.

Download: Andre 3000 – “Class of 3000 Theme Song”

[This was mentioned in the press release, for those that haven’t heard — Dre will be co-starring in a film with Will Ferrell called Semi-Pro, due out next year, about a basketball team in the old ABA days. Don’t really know much else about the plot, but, if you’re like me, Will Ferrell, Andre 3000, and basketball all together sells itself.] Sphere: Related Content

Move Soul Train to Kanye’s Studio.

It’s like a dance party in there!

In this clip from QD3’s The MC – Why We Do It DVD (and on permanent loan from Nah Right), Kanye flips an old Shirley Bassey record into a beat so infectious, he can’t stop himself from getting down. It’s assuring to know that me and Kanye share the same dance moves.

I would assume that this clip was edited well and that Kanye can’t really put a beat like this together in under 5 minutes. But, if that’s not the case, then we need quicker turnaround time on the release of his albums — I’m talking 2 new Kanye albums a year, at least. How about we move the release date for Graduation up to next week, and A Good Ass Job by the end of the year? Then, Promotion and Marriage in ’08, First Born Child and Divorce in ’09, New Hot Young Wife and Early Retirement in ’10, Boredom and Another Good Ass Job in ’11, Old Age and Death in ’12, and Afterlife and Reincarnation in ’13. And after that, if there are any more records left to sample, start over again.

UPDATE: Turns out that Kanye beat was used on Do Or Die’s 2005 album D.O.D. on the track “Paid The Price”, which also features Kanye. Kudos to the one of 20 people who actually heard that album for pointing it out. Since I’m stuck at my jay-oh-bee and can’t hook up an MP3 link, here’s the video for the single from that album, “Higher”, which is also produced by and featuring Kanye.

Kobe Trade Scenario Addendum.

When I first posted Kobe Trade Scenarios #1 and #2, it was mostly in jest. I say “mostly” because, although I wrote the majority of those posts under the influence of deception and betrayal, by the time “KTS1” actually made it to ML’s front page, Kobe had rescinded his trade demand just moments later (it’s like he was intentionally trying to spite me), and I thereafter made multiple changes what I was planning to post as “KTS2” to reflect that fact — I probably wouldn’t have even posted the 2nd one if I hadn’t finished writing it beforehand (I don’t like to let things go to waste). Little did I know that the 2 teams I had Kobe being traded to in my scenarios, New York and Chicago, are the 2 teams that he wants to be traded to in the midst of his thousandth trade demand since the Lakers’ elimination from the playoffs. [Here’s something to think about — what’s happened more often in the past few weeks? Kobe Bryant demanding a trade or Lil’ Wayne dropping a mixtape?]

In a post on his official website (which speaks to a much greater magnitude then a questionable newspaper report or Kobe running his mouth on the radio), Kobe says that he and Lakers’ owner Dr. Jerry Buss have “two different visions” for the Lakers’ future. I’d say that, as opposed to Kobe’s “fantasy land” vision, Dr. Buss’ vision is more reality-based, considering that teams who lose/get rid of a franchise player like Shaquille O’Neal aren’t exactly competing for championships the next day. It happened to the Orlando Magic when Shaq bounced from there in ’96 (Orlando hasn’t moved past the 1st round of the playoffs since), it’s happening to the Lakers now, and, sorry to break this to any Miami Heat fans reading this, but once Shaq retires, I doubt that y’all will really be making the extra effort to coordinate your outfits so damn well.

As the “resident Laker fan” to many close friends, I’m sick of defending Kobe. Every reason he gives to try to justify his actions of late just smell more and more bullshittier. I especially enjoy the whole “Dr. Buss lied to me”-angle. Now, I’ve got nothing but love for Jerry Buss — his pockets-got-the-mumps bank account has helped together some great rosters in the past. But, honestly, the guy comes off as a kind of sleazy — he’s 74 years old kicking it with Hugh Hefner, with fuck-buddies in their 20s (one of whom was riding shotgun during Dr. Buss’ recent DUI arrest). With his the face of his franchise on the verge of singing elsewhere, he told Kobe what Kobe wanted to hear — something along the lines of “We’ll build a contender again soon.” Dr. Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979 for $67.5 million, and that’s a probably a fraction of his net worth nowadays — I’m sorry, but you don’t get that rich by telling people the truth. If Kobe expects sympathy for taking the bait and falling for Dr. Buss’ sweet-talkin’ ways, then maybe a college education would’ve done him some good.

Kobe also wants to talk about the mistakes the Lakers have made in free agency, yet tries to front like he wasn’t with Magic Johnson and Phil Jackson, dialing up Vladimir Radmanovic at 9 a.m. in Serbia (as someone with relatives in Serbia, I know that Kobe was up at midnight to make that phone call), trying to get him to sign with the team — Vladimir did sign, and his first season was pretty much a disaster. It’s as if one minute Kobe is deep in the thick of things, discussing potential moves with the Lakers’ front office, and then the next minute, he’s on the outside looking in, acting like decisions are made without his input. With this sort of inconsistency of his part, it’s no surprise that Kobe’s changed his mind every other day about wanting to be a Laker.

If there’s anything that disappoints me about this whole ordeal, other than the obvious fact that my favorite NBA team appears on the verge of trading one of the game’s best players in recent memory, it’s the total lack of intrigue. When Shaq and Allen Iverson made their trade demands, there were lots of teams that could’ve been possible destinations for each. Meanwhile, in Kobe’s case, it looks like it’s down to only the Knicks and the Bulls. I’m not buying the hype about the Suns — I just can’t see the Lakers trading Kobe to a team in the Western Conference, let alone a team in their same division.

But, if there is one thing intriguing going on here, it would have to be this website, that claims to have video of Kobe speaking “openly” (i.e. curse words) about his frustration with the Lakers, and claims further that a “private party” offered $100,000 to have this video destroyed.

The video will soon be sold on this site for $1.99, for anyone out there who is still not sick of Kobe. At this point, I couldn’t blame you if you were.

Fight For Your Right To Party.

Speaks kind of negatively about the state of hip hop and the music industry when being released by a record label is cause for celebration, doesn’t it? Peep the trailer for (new free agents) Dilated Peoples’ Release Party DVD/CD, set for release July 31st.

I found it kind of refreshing to hear Evidence say that they went to Capitol Records because they were gonna let Dilated “do their shit.” That was back around ’99-’00 — funny how times change. It seemed as if Capitol was down for the cause at first, and Dilated wasn’t doing that bad sales-wise (I can’t recall if Expansion Team went gold, but if it didn’t, it came really close). But as the years passed, and groups like Dilated became less relevant to the masses, and major labels became less interested in putting money behind artists with smaller (but loyal) fanbases, it became clear that the relationship wasn’t going to last. That’s probably why neither side put much effort behind 20/20, which was hardly promoted and not up to par with the group’s previous work.

Having met and gotten autographs from Ev, Rakaa and Babu after a performance a few years back, I can say that they put on a killer live show, they’ve released some great music (including Ev’s recently-released solo debut, The Weatherman LP), and they’re all real stand-up guys (the fact that they stuck it out at Capitol for 4 albums serves as a testament to that). Wherever their next endeavors lead them, I’m sure they’ll be putting out more great music in the future.

Mark your calendars…

… because Comedy Central is set to roast Flava Flav — the man with a face only a mother, and a gaggle of money-hungry skanks out for reality-TV money, could love — later this year. XXL is reporting that it will air on Sunday, August 10th, though August 10th is actually a Friday, but I’m confident we’ll be hearing plenty more about this as August approaches. I’m curious to see how this roast will go, as after two seasons of messing with all those chicks on Flavor of Love, I think that Flav may have been “burnt” a few times already, if you follow me.

One of my favorite Flava Flav moments was at a BET Awards show a few years ago, when Public Enemy was being interviewed during the pre-show by former BET personality/failed rapper/NOT a mother to a Jay-Z baby, Free. I kid you not, Free actually asked Flav, “So, what’s up with the clock?” Flav kept it together, but you could tell he was a split second away from blurting out, “Bitch, have you ever seen me WITHOUT a clock?”

Rapping With The Stars?

I read in TVSquad, and in XXL, that MTV is planning on launching a ‘Dancing With The Stars’ type show called ‘Rapping With The Stars’. Now I would like to know the logic behind this show, since not many details are out, dancing is a 2-person activity, rapping is generally more of a 1 activity thing (not counting working with a producer, or a rapping duo), so the execution of such a show is already looking suspect. This will be amusing (kind of like the White Rapper Show), or disastrous (ie having the Ying Yang Twins or Youngbloodz as the stars).

ML’s Something to View 4.06.07

Damn! I haven’t done this stuff in such a long time you’d probably would have thought by now there wasn’t anything hot to view. Well if that was true, your hallucinations are brutal! To whip this series back into shape today I watched Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story. This is a mockumentary; think something ala The Office but instead of an office playing the setting it’s paintball battlefields and the very sophisticated places paintball players hangout. The story is about Bobby Dukes (played by Rob Corddry) who rose up to be a legend in paintball, attempting to make a comeback into the paintball world after being gone on a 10 year hiatus after being caught cheating. All of the characters in this are quirky oddballs that have their unique ways of making you laugh. It’s always good when you can even laugh at the villain. Anyway if you like The Office, Best Week Ever, or The Daily Show, you will really enjoy the movie.

Here is the trailer.

The White Rapper Show + Tyrese Update.

I was about to turn off the TV last night when something caught my eye. It was the last few minutes of egotrip’s White Rapper Show. I decided to check out the show just because egotrip was handling the show. A little background info, Egotrip is a now-defunct magazine/set of books/TV show maker for VH1. I own all their books (Big Book of Racism & The Book of Rap Lists), I’ve seen all their previous VH1 show specials like race-o-rama, and they made some of the best hip-hop television I’ve have ever watched. If you’ve ever read any of their written product (that written product is what’s hot yo!) you can see the seamless transition from the minds that brought you the magazines/books working to transport their genius to the TV medium. Anyway, back to show, its hosted by MC Serch of 3rd Bass, who is a heavily slept on icon in hip hop (I would consider him as a link to the bridge between Beastie’s and Eminem). Serch really shines on the show, by not putting on some sugar-coated survivor TV reality host shit act. You get to see who the true Serch is, the one you’d be staring down in your A&R meeting. I kind of wish they will incorporate some white rappers outside of Serch into the show to the contestant how it is done. I’m not necessarily talking about Eminem, people like Bubba Sparxxx, Lil Wyte, or even ML favorite Hot Karl would suffice. From what I saw at the end, egotrip’s humorous touches are incorporated into the show, their dedication to hip-hop history isn’t either. I didn’t get to see much of the episode, I hope to catch the rerun, but it looks like the people involved are true hip-hop heads. They have to be, by getting people from Grandmaster Flash to Prince Paul to be a part of the show. As for the contestants they don’t seem too bad, defiantly not some rapping American Idol rejects, I look forward to see how they develop. It airs Monday nights, check out the VH1 site for the show. Maybe I should liveblog/episode recap for this series or something.

As for Tyrese thing I mentioned last week, apparently the whole incident was “distorted”, riiiight.

p.s. I did see the Snoop movie, a post should come soon.

PSA: SET YOUR TIVOS TO BET ON SATURDAY AT 11pm!

On Saturday night, if you can’t catch it, set your VCR, tivos, camcorders to record Snoop Dogg in Boss’n Up. While there isn’t too much info regarding this movie, just the part of it being a musical with Snoop Dogg has me immediately sold.

IMDB (It is right around Killa Season [Our Review] territory with a 3.0 rating, as where Killa Season has a 3.4)

Come back maybe Sunday..or next month.. because we sorta procrastinate around here for Oprah’s Book Club-level type of discussion, bring your reading glasses!

Some quick notes:

Free Busta shirts going to print very soon? Anyone else amused hearing the news refer to him as “Mr. Rhymes” when mentioning the incident?

Tyrese puts his own spin on getting publicity for an album, a rap album at that, but no guns involved, just to-be-baby-mamas being assaulted. Classy. I’m just hoping it was just a stunt, and not some reenactment of his character from ‘Baby Boy’ in real life.
